Former Liston trophy winner has a stroke

Wishing former Tasmanian VFL and Adelaide Crows player and 2005 JJ Liston trophy winner Ian "Nutsy" Callinan all the best after having a stroke recently.

He was playing footy this year, he is 37 years of age

All the best "Nutsy"

Just terrible. Ian Callinan was one of those players who have his all four the Tassie Devils. I admitted him as one of Port's quality opponents and took an interest in his career at Adelaide. Still young too.

Hopefully the damage done isn't too severe and he makes as close to a full recovery as possible.

Was a great player with the tassie devils in the vfl. Hopefully a speedy recovery.

Agreed, a star in the VFL and not too shabby at AFL level either, way too young to be having a stroke, best wishes for a speedy recovery.

George, on another note, do you know where I could get my hands on a copy, either hard copy or digital, of Northcote's 1961 Second Division premiership side? I have a contact who is attempting to put together a collection of every VFA premiership team from 1877 and he cannot find a copy of that team's premiership photo. As you are the got-to man for everything Dragons, I thought you would be a good starting point.

Hi Wally,
If you have Facebook send a message to Laurie Aghan as there is a photo posted on his Facebook page.
Laurie Aghan was involved in a few VFA clubs including Northcote, Yarraville and Port Melbourne. Was a legend in the VAFA with huge success. Laurie has a wealth of knowledge in football, boxing and a lot of sport.

Thanks George

I'm not on Facebook but the person who is after the photo is, so I have passed Laurie's details on to him and he will make contact. I knew you would come up with the answer, cheers W.

Terry Keays senior was part of the dragons premiership team that year.
Would be great effort to compile as many premiership team photos dating back to 1877.
Have you seen the Williamstown team photo from 1908 on the seagulls website.
Some very rough looking characters in the photo. Reckon many current AFL players would be petrified lining up against some of the willy guys from 1908 LOL.

Was he the father of the lad who played for Collingwood at 16yo?

There are two blokes working on the project and I believe they have been fairly successful so far but that Northcote pic was one that has eluded them.

Yeah I've seen the 1908 pic, they were hard men from hard times, bit different from the pampered chaps of today complaining about their pillows at their 5 star hub in sunny Queensland

He was the father of Terry Keays who played with Collingwood at a young age. Went to Richmond and played at Frankston as well. Never quite lived up to his reputation. Was a very strong overhead mark. My brother played junior footy against him and said he was a much bigger kid at juniors and a class above. He use to kick the ball a mile in the juniors. In think majority of VFA premiership photos should be easily located. I see someone uploaded some great colour footage of Fitzroy v Hawthorn from Glenferrie Oval early 60s. The clip only goes for a bit over 4 minutes. Around the 2 minute mark you see a red rattler in the background. With the lock-down a lot have been going through old photos, footy records and tapes. NFSA have plenty of Ch0 news items listed from the late 60s through the 70s. Would be great to get hold of the Sunday news where they would have the VFA results with brief highlights of the match of the day. Maybe if the VFA hall of fame gets off the ground might be a way to get these from NFSA.

Where was the footage of the Fitzroy v. Hawthorn game uploaded to?

Terry Keays played one year at Frankston -  1993, and was then drafted back to Collingwood I think.
