Good footy but no points for Frankston

FRANKSTON coach Simon Goosey said a 10-minute lapse at the start of the third quarter thwarted the Dolphins' quest for a boilover win against reigning premier North Ballarat on Saturday.

The Roosters, inspired by North Melbourne star Leigh Harding, pounced to kick four goals in the third term and forge clear for a 29-point win, 11.9 (75) to 6.10 (46).

Dixon leads fightback, Smith seals triumph

EVERY footballer dreams of winning a game with a kick after the final siren, but few get the opportunity.

Zac Smith had his chance on Saturday and made no mistake.

A 40m kick from the Gold Coast ruckman had just enough elevation to make it across the point line and give the Gold Coast a dramatic 13.12 (90) to 13.11 (89) victory over the Bendigo Bombers at Cazlays.

The thrilling finale put an exclamation point on an extraordinary fightback from the Gold Coast, who looked set for a thrashing after trailing by five goals at quarter-time.

Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna said his players had showed commendable resolve to win the game after such a poor start.

"For the boys to experience what they did today and then to come out on top was really a message about belief for them," he said.

"We are good enough if we want to be good enough. Technically, we’re good enough but you need to be able to believe in yourself to be able to take these sides on."

Bendigo Bombers capitulate in second half of clash with Gold Coast in Cairns

THE Bendigo Bank Bombers squandered a 40-point half-time lead against the Gold Coast on Saturday as they lost their VFL match in Cairns with a kick after the siren.

Scores were level at 89 apiece when the final siren sounded.

However, at the final siren Gold Coast ruckman Zac Smith had the ball in his hands 40m out after marking a pass from Hayden Jolly.

Kicking into the breeze, any score would do for the Gold Coast to win just its third game of the season.

Smith’s kick after the siren went through for a behind, which gave the Gold Coast a 13.12 (90) to 13.11 (89) victory at Cazaly’s Stadium.

The defeat was a bitter blow for the eighth-placed Bombers, who are now 6-7 and with a tough fight on their hands over the last five rounds if they are to play finals for the first time since 2007.

Port Melbourne reigns in last quarter against Casey Scorpions

PORT Melbourne is safe for the finals. Now it will go boot-for-leather for a top-four finish and double chance.

The Boroughs on Saturday stitched up a fourth consecutive September engagement with a 25-point win over the third-placed Casey Scorpions at an achingly cold Casey Fields.

Using a strong wind going to the cricket ground end, they drilled seven goals to one in the last quarter to transform a three-quarter-time deficit into their ninth success this season.

Before the match coach Gary Ayres remarked that most games are won and lost in the midfield and Port had three supreme onballers in Adam Bentick (39 disposals), Toby Pinwill (35) and Shane Valenti (25) and another influential player in rover Ryan McMahon (24 possessions and two goals in the final quarter).

German spray spurs on Seagulls

Picture: David SmithNOT even skipper Brett Johnson was safe.

When Williamstown coach Peter German unloaded on his players in the three-quarter-time huddle against Coburg on Saturday, it was momentarily easy to forget that the Seagulls were 18 points to the good.

But German clearly hadn't liked what he saw in the third term as the Tigers previously goalless for almost 60 minutes booted four unanswered goals to draw within striking distance of Willi.

Western Bulldogs rookie Matt Panos wore a spray, and even captain Brett Johnson as reliable and constant as taxes copped a handful of choice words from a steely eyed German.

His words did the trick.

Charlie Dixon pumped for Gold Coast AFL visit

From The Cairns Post
Reported by Andrew Piva
Full Article Click Here

HE is probably a bit biased but Cairns native Charlie Dixon would love it if Cazalys becomes a home away from home for new AFL franchise the Gold Coast.

Dixon has been named at centre-half forward for the Gold Coast ahead of their VFL match against the Bendigo Bombers at Cazalys tomorrow.

It will be Dixon’s first game at the ground since playing for Cairns Saints in the 2007 AFL Cairns grand final against the Manunda Hawks.

AFL Cairns wants to build a strong relationship with the Gold Coast and Dixon hopes that leads to more games in the Far North.

"Cairns does a great job of supporting the AFL with things like the NAB Cup matches," Dixon said.

"It’s a great ground Cazalys and I hope it gets to a stage where we can play once or twice a year up there."

With Dixon, Hope Vale’s Rex Liddy and star recruit Karmichael Hunt named in the Gold Coast team for tomorrow, AFL Cairns hopes a sizeable crowd of 3000 or more turns up to support the fixture.
