Williamstown - Prelim Final Chokers?
Body:
I'll be as popular as a wine stain on white carpet probably but there is no avoiding the fact that today was yet another loss for Williamstown in a Preliminary Final. They've caved in at Prelim Final stage in 2006, 2007 and now 2008. Great achievement to get there again, but when you fall at the last hurdle so frequently you surely need to analyse why it happens. The past two years much of the blame, at least from an outsiders perspective, was on the Magpies. To be blunt I dont think the Dogs have helped them that much this year either, barring perhaps Peter Street and Wayde Skipper - who probably won't be around next year. I think Williamstown have an exceptional list of VFL players, they have for most of this decade and the fact they've played in so many reserves premierships highlights their depth. Have they got too many guys in between VFL reserves and VFL senior standard? Do they take too long to blood their young guys? I think they only played two VFL listed debutants this year in the seniors - clearly the lowest of any VFL club. There seems to be a lot of faith in Brad Gotch, I'm not saying he's done a bad job but might they need a new voice in there? Port Melbourne look set to widen that gap next week as the most successful VFA/VFL club. I'm sure that grates on the nerves of the Seagulls faithful who've had their chances in recent times to close that gap.
