Casey Fields
Body:
(sounds like a Baseball ground but anyway) I posted a link on the news page, but here is the article:
By Alison Noonan Casey mayor Neil Lucas, Scorpions president John Sharkie and Football Victoria CEO Ken Gannon at the announcement that the Scorpions are moving to Casey. CASEY Field’s worst-kept secret was officially announced on Monday. VFL club the Scorpions (formerly Springvale) will take up home at the $4.2 million sporting facility in Cranbourne East as of the start of the 2006 football season. A small gathering of council, football and local media representatives were transported via shuttle bus to the construction site to hear the news, which has been the subject of rumours for several months. Club president John Sharkie said the Casey Scorpions, as they will be known next year, would be at Casey Fields for the long term and would provide outstanding sporting opportunities for young people throughout the area. "This has been a long time in the planning but represents stability, opportunity and great responsibility for our club," he said. "The club has a responsibility to develop emerging talent in the region. "There will be opportunities for up-and-coming players to come into our system and play a very good standard of football." Mr Sharkie assured local clubs there was no need to fear the Scorpions’ presence as they would enhance, rather than take away from, the local football experience. "We will embrace the whole of the community and have a close working relationship with our friends at the Cranbourne Football Club," he said. "Whatever level players achieve with the Casey Scorpions, they will take back to their local club the expertise and knowledge they have gained from the VFL system." Casey mayor Neil Lucas described the deal as an "historical event", saying local players now had something to aspire to. "There will be wonderful opportunities for our young people, residents can take pride in their local league and the Scorpions will reap many benefits," he said. "We are at the start of something really big that will make its mark in Casey. "We welcome the Casey Scorpions and look forward to the day when they will run out of this pavilion to play football." Football Victoria CEO Ken Gannon said the move was part of the new VFL of the future, which aimed to make local football stronger by linking the community. "We want to reach out to the fast-growing areas of Melbourne and not be centrally based in the old suburbs of inner Melbourne," he said. "It’s important that our game offers young people leadership, a place to play and aspire to the top. "A VFL club in the Casey area will provide that leadership and also make local football stronger with strong links to the community." Cranbourne Football Club president Geoff Laffin said it was an exciting time for his club, which would share Casey Fields as its home with the Scorpions. "This is good for the future of Cranbourne and gives our kids an opportunity to be looked at," he said. "It has been two years of hard yards but we got there eventually." The announcement follows the council’s recent call for tenders for the construction of the major pavilion, grandstand and hospitality area.
