Carmody and Harrison to leave Scoprs . . . possibly
Body:
Scorpions stars weigh up futures THE fallout from former Casey Scorpions coach Peter Banfield’s resignation is far from over, with star veterans Steven Harrison and Nigel Carmody set to leave. Banfield, 41, quit his post after the Scorpions decided to advertise his position last month. Harrison’s father John, the former chairman of the football executive at the club, also walked out after the decision. Speaking after winning his fifth Gardner-Clark Medal on Friday night, Steve Harrison, 27, revealed his disgust at how Casey had treated Banfield. “I think all the young guys are fine and understand this is what happens in football, and I understand that a bit as well,” he said. “But people keep telling me it’s a business and a corporation, but this club has never been that to me and it’s never been that over a period of time – we would never have survived if it was. “If I wasn’t emotional about the club, I wouldn’t have the memories I do and wouldn’t have played the way I did for the jumper and the club over that period of time.” Despite saying he was still considering his position at the Scorpions, an MPNFL Peninsula league source confirmed this week that Harrison was expected to sign with Chelsea this weekend. The former Casey captain has a close friendship with Chelsea and ex-Scorpions player Taylor Irish. Harrison said he had spoken with up to 10 teams, but was never going to play for another Victorian Football League (VFL) side. Casey captain Carmody, who was runner-up in the Gardner-Clark Medal, is also weighing up his options after the Banfield saga. “I won’t deny that Pete’s departure hasn’t got something to do with it, but I’m at a point in my career where I look at every year very carefully and will do for every remaining year of my career,” Carmody said. “I’ll be looking at my options more than I ever have.” Prahran resident Carmody will remain in the VFL, but is likely to move to an inner-city club. If both Harrison and Carmody, who are 10-year players at the Scorpions, are to leave, Casey will have no players over the age of 24 following Troy Makepeace’s decision last month to play for Moe next year. Carmody is disenchanted with the board and agreed with Harrison’s questioning of its ‘business’ mantra. “If the club wants to embrace a general level of professionalism, what’s good for the coach should be good enough for everyone across the organisation,” he said. “The only way teams, whether in business or football, get better is if everyone is judged on the same basis. “The expectation that only the best will do should exist across the whole organisation, but I’m not sure whether that’s the case at the moment.” The role St Kilda is playing in the coaching situation is also a concern for Harrison. “The club has always been very adamant about not losing its own culture. That’s important to me as a player,” he said. “The alignment (with the Saints) this year was probably the best it’s been. I think it was handled well. “That was a really good aspect, but it’s just up in the air and it’s really frustrating because we really thought we were doing something over the last three years. “I honestly believe in the next two years if Peter stayed on board, with the playing list we were developing, we were a massive chance to win the flag.” The search for the new Scorpions coach is reaching fever point, with the club making a shortlist of five individuals on Monday.
