The VFL FAIL when it comes to success of the state game!
What a brilliant game - close and high scoring. And that is what the powers to be will pat themselves on the back for. But according to a post on Bigfooty, just 2360 people turned up to the game. That was a pathetic crowd. Also, very disappointing that the VFL season fixture and possibly a season so far report was not put in the VFL Record. That was a simple thing that was overlooked. 1.10pm starts DO NOT work! The reserves game was a great concept, but 10AM was TOO EARLY! And if the game was today you could have added a few thousand to the crowd. Saturday games in the VFL DO NOT work! It is time the VFL started running things to benefit themselves and do what the fans want. The fans say SUNDAY GAMES and if games are to be on a Saturday then they want them at 2PM! And if the ABC refuse to come to the party then so be it. The VFL survives because of people who go to the games, not because of the lazy TV watchers.

I would much rather Sunday games. Most people who follow the competition do. The fact is, that the ABC will only broadcast on Saturday. It is short sighted and norrowminded to suggest that the VFL just stand up to the ABC. It is for the supporters to stand up to the ABC. Without sponsorship of the comepetion, it may not exist;. Without television, even the ABC, there would be less to offer a sponsor. On that basis, the Saturday game, and even the 1.10 start is a necessary evil. Its that or die.

I would doubt that even 2000 people were in attendence and considering how good a day weather wise it was for the middle of May it makes the crowd even more pathetic BTW I wonder if the VFL fools realised that there were NO AFL games in Melbourne today .What a golden chance wasted.

Hardly anybody shows up to these games. And the split round idea by goUUUdogs - yeah that would have been good. Not sure why it was held so early.

What was on today? NOTHING!!! Yeah, I was wondering why we were there yesterday and not today. I'm sure the Sunday Arts program on ABC could have been moved for a day.

Gannon and the VFL need to promote the state game better. I know its a tough battle with the AFL being so popular but there are ways. Maybe next year Ken Gannon can give Eddie McGuire a call and get him to give the game a quick plug on the footy show!! Eddie used to commentate and report for the VFA in the 80s and Im sure he would be happy to do it. Thats where got his start in footy. By giving a 10 second plug, a couple of 100 thousand people at least know there is a game on. And its the only state vs state match so if the scheduling is right it could be a success. Does anyone have any ideas to promote the state game??

Fair go burraburger ... a mate works at media out let in Melb (TV station)and tells me he is always getting emails from the VFL. Don't think its Gannon (cause I'd say they've got a media bloke, not the CEO sending out stuff) but I think its the media outlets choosing other things to promote instead. We need to hassle them about promoting VFL, the more people that ring and bombard them with requests - the more chance of them promoting it. IT'S WHAT THE FANS WANT!!

Have to agree with Footymad. Why have a crack at the VFL when the time is set pretty much by the ABC. If the ABC will only broadcast on a Saturday, and they do this with the VFL, the SANFL, and the WAFL, then what the hell are they supposed to do. I accept that there are some issues with setting other games on a Saturday, but the fixturing is in part a result of what the clubs want. It may be worth looking at the issue of the AFL split round, but the Saturday is going to have to stay if the ABC is going to show it. No TV, no sponsorship!

"It (crowd number) doesn't drive interstate footy, we are committed to investing in state footy," he said. "The standard of the game and the way it was played showed how much the players want to play interstate footy. Look at the omment by Gannon - WHAT A GOOSE! Ofcourse the crowd size does matter the crowd on Sat was a laughing stock for the supposed major comp outside the AFL. No doubt when the VFL GF crowd gets down to 2000 odd he will say the same thing "that crowds dont matter" . What would a failed Geelong official who is no doubt still sucking $100,000 salary from the VFL know about sports marketing? Not much by the sound of it. Its just $10,000 wasted by the VFL every year so a few third rate players can claim that they once played for "Victoria"

That just about takes the cake. You talk about somebody not knowing about promotion, then slag off at the players you beleive they don't know how to promote. I don't want to critical, but it just lacks any logic. I would be happy for you to tell us all WHO the THIRD RATE players are that represented Victoria on Saturday. Every single player on the ground, from what I saw, gave their all. It was a fantastic display and one of the best games I have seen all year (AFL included). I agree that the Saturday is always going to be a problem, but I dont see any solution from you other than lopsided critisism. The only thing goig for your Posts is that they are consistent!! Might be time to just ignore them I think.
