Burnie Football Club quits Tasmanian State League

From ABC News on line 6 Feb

By Chris Rowbottom

One of Tasmania's most successful football clubs, the Burnie Dockers, has withdrawn from the Tasmanian State League (TSL) because it does not have the numbers to field a team.

The Burnie Dockers will not be represented at any men's level in the state competition this year. The club has informed AFL Tasmania it will not have enough players to field teams in the in the Tasmanian State League or Development League this season.

The club held what was dubbed a "call to arms" function last Friday night, before making the final decision to withdraw from the league at a board meeting on Monday night.

The move follows fellow north-west club Devonport's decision to also drop out of the competition in 2018, and continue on in the North West Football League (NWFL). The TSL competition will now have no representation on the north-west coast. It will continue as a seven-team league, with five clubs from the south and two from the north.

The future of the Dockers is now in limbo. It has no representation in the NWFL, with only a TSL women's team to take the field this season.

The club won 38 first division premierships across its 132 year history, including the TSL premiership in 2012.

Interestingly I was in Burnie a couple of weeks ago and its sad they are struggling as they have a great set up at the excellent ground by the docks.Another stuff up by the AFL run AFL Tasmania.

Burnie Hawks merged with Cooee in the 80s ? Very sad as Burnie have been a great club with lots of history. The AFL clowns would not give a hoot and pump $$$ into GWS and Womens League. Now they are trying that drivel AFLX.  The worst ever mistake was made by Scott Wade and co getting rid of the Tassie Devils. Was this forced on by Demetriou and co ? Funny that when it was out the devils from the VFL and in with the Giants AFL. Tassie players being dratfed is about as rare as a Tassie Devil. Tasmania has produced many champions over the years and is a great traditional footy state. Very sad the way things are going. Hope to see PK do well with Glenorchy this year. Good luck PK

Hate to play Devil’s advocate, but if the premier competition in the state shrinks from 9 teams to 7, how can Tasmania possibly make any claim to being capable of supporting a new AFL operation?

From the outside it appears Australian Rules interest is shrinking, not expanding.....

There is no way Tassie could afford an AFL team there is just not eonough money in the state to fund one and the AFL have other prioirties they are spending millions on.

The AFL are happy to have both Hawthorn and North bloodsuck money from the broke and stupid Tasmanian Government so why would they spend much money on grassroots footy in a State of only 500,000 people?Thats less than a 1/4 of the western suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne

The AFL are now a very powerful business monoply and it does what is likes to keep that monopoly in place.

So if teams or comps go under they dont care now that they have the womens game up and running and filling the void.
