Hugh 'Butch' Litchfield
Here's a request for faithful Seagulls supporters that I'm hoping you can help the daughter of Hugh 'Butch' Litchfield who passed away recently and played in the 1980s.

His daughter is seeking any footage of her father.

Can anyone help?

Hello to whom it may concern,
My name is kirstin Litchfield I am the loving daughter of Hugh “butch” Litchfield, whom was a record holder in the  80’s of kicking a massive 20 goals in a game 103 goals one season then following it up by kicking a huge 134 goals in a season whom unfortunately has passed away in the last. few weeks I’m writing to ask in favour and high hopes  of anyone may be able to help me or guide me in direction of maybe some footage tapes or commentated games my dad might of played in for sunshine , Williamstown so I can help remember my dad thanking you kindly to take the time to read this or maybe be able to help

North port i can help for sure. I have several tapes with butch playing. In the game against oakleigh in 1985 at skinner reserve ross from oakleigh hit Litchfield where there was a few scuffles and a fairly physical typical vfa footy back then. Hard and tough.  After the game a blonde girl could have been butchs sister jumped the fence and gave ross a nice old backhander.  I was behind the goals. This game i have on tape. Probably about 10 games of butch all up i have. She can pm me.

There's footage on YouTube of Sunshine from 1985 & 1986, is that the era when Butch played? I could dig up old photos of him from footy records and the Dogtown Dialogue if she would be interested in that

At a guess I would have Oakleigh v Sunshine games from 85/86/87/88 home and away. Finals from 86/87/88. Maybe Butch in 2 or 3 games when he played with the seagulls. At least 10 games overall.

Did some research on Butch today, he was a gun full-forward back in the mid-late 80's. Crossed to Sunshine from Braybrook in 1985 at the age of 21 and kicked 110 goals in his first season, including bags of 10 v Mordialloc in round 6, 10 v Caulfield in round 17, 13 v Berwick in round 18 (23 in two consecutive games!!), posted the ton in the winning first semi-final against Caulfield, then kicked a lazy 9 in a 10-point loss to Oakleigh in the preliminary. He also got 12 votes in the J. Field Medal.

He bettered that effort in 1986 with a total of 134, kicking 13 v. Waverley in round 5, 13 v. Caulfield in round 6 (26 in two consecutive games!!), 10 v. Box Hill in round 8, 20 v. Mordialloc in round 14 to bring up his century and then 10 v. Caulfield again in round 17. He kicked 4 goals in the Crow's three-goal Grand Final defeat at the hands of Box Hill. He also attracted 12 votes in the J. Field Medal once again, two votes in front of Jim Stynes during his stint at Prahran.

I'll do some more research next week from 1987-onwards, and will be interested to relive his time at Williamstown.

Not sure digs, he played about 150-odd with your Roosters from memory, so he may get it this year if he keeps getting a game & doesn't cop any injuries or suspensions. I think 175 is the number of games he needs for life membership.

Butch featured on a few abc games for the seagulls. He was handy but did not reach the lofty heights he did with at sunshine. With a forward line of chops, delre etc pretty hard to get in. He had untapped ability and was also a more than handy cricketer. He was also an avid Richmond supporter despite coming from the west. Was a very strong mark and good shot at goal. Did not mind the tough stuff either and could handle himself. Built a strong following when at sunshine.

Wal,

I had an idea he only had about seven games to go this year so I thought he would be getting close !!
