Southport Sharks sign former St Kilda AFL defender Brodie Murdoch for 2018 NEAFL competition

SOUTHPORT Sharks have announced their first major signing of the off-season, bringing in former St Kilda defender Brodie Murdoch.

“We are very happy to sign a player of Brodie’s calibre,” new Sharks coach Stephen Daniel said.

“He will certainly bring a lot of experience and a professional attitude to our football club.”

Murdoch, a South Australian product who originally played for Glenelg in the SANFL, was taken at pick 40 of the 2012 draft.

He went on to play 22 games for the Saints over four seasons.

The 23-year-old was part of the Port Melbourne side that won the VFL in September.

Sharks football manager Jarrod Field saw Murdoch playing in Melbourne earlier this year and didn’t hesitate to bring him to Queensland when he showed interest.

“He has a big left foot and we are really happy to have him on board,” Field said.

The recruitment is a positive sign for Southport who finished second-last in the NEAFL this season, continuing a tough few years for the club that was once a powerhouse.

Thats loss number two - good luck to Brodie - wish him all the best. Historically we have been able to recruit well and with winning the premiership i would expect that trend to continue. Hopefully we can keep the majority of the team. Time will tell i spose.
