Recent History / Preview – Round 18 vs. Box Hill HawksAugust 17, 2017NewsArticle by Sam Wharton, Box Hill Hawks, Recent HistoryPort Melbourne FC
Port Melbourne will travel to Box Hill City Oval on Sunday for a big set of clashes with the Box Hill Hawks.

Above anything else, this game will mark the 200th Senior appearance of inspirational skipper Toby Pinwill.

32-year-old Pinwill has been a champion Borough player for a sustained period of time, having won back-to-back Jack McFarlane Medals in 2014/15 and named Norm Goss Medallist in the club’s 2011 Grand Final victory over Williamstown – amongst several other accolades in the VFL competition.

He is set to become just the eighth player in the history of the Port Melbourne Football Club to play 200 or more games.

He joins legends such as Fred Cook, Billy Swan, Bob Bonnett and Greg Dermott – as well as former Premiership teammates Sam Pleming, John Baird and Ryan McMahon – to achieve the milestone.

His teammates will be hoping to celebrate the day with a win that would also prove important in the context of their season.

Currently sitting in third position, the Borough have no less than four sides snapping at their heels and hoping to replace them in a top 4 position with just two weeks left in the home-and-away season.

A win over the Hawks would go a long way towards securing that vital ‘double-chance’ Finals berth.

Box Hill will be no pushover though – in fact, far from it.

They’ve been sitting top of the table for the majority of the year, and only fell six points short of winning their fifth game on the trot last weekend against Essendon.

Port will need to work hard to combat the influence of the likes of ex-Port Adelaide dasher Andrew Moore, exciting young forward Sam Switkowski and Hawthorn-listed big man Tyrone Vickery (pending AFL selection).

Jaeger O’Meara also returned from injury through the Box Hill side last Saturday, and was named in the best for his 3 goals and 25 disposals. He will require significant attention if he fronts up against the Borough this week.

Port will be looking to continue the form that they displayed in their 160-point demolition of Coburg at home in Round 17, where the individual contribution was quite obviously vast and widespread across the ground.

Jordan Lisle booted seven majors, and was able to put himself just one goal off the top of the leader board in the VFL competition’s race for the ‘Frosty’ Miller Medal.

The recent history of these two clubs is littered with some amazingly hard-fought contests and close finishes, none more so than the thrilling Draw that they played out in Round 7 of this season.

It promises to be a similarly tough battle with the Hawks this weekend; and with so much at stake as well as the celebration of a club champion’s milestone, we hope to see a typically strong contingent of travelling Borough faithful.

The Development League will kick things off at 11:00am, where a win would confirm their spot on top of the table with a Bye to follow in the final home-and-away round next week.

The Seniors clash will commence at 2:00pm.

As always, the club’s social media channels will be the best way to keep across all the action from Box Hill City Oval on Sunday should you not be able to attend.

A big away win for the Borough in the lead up to what is going to be an exciting finals campaign!

I'll post up a full run down of the game tomorrow.

If someone has a photo of the Tony Pinwill banner, I would very much like a copy!

Another really good quality game of footy between these two clubs. If September action is as good as this game was, then we should be in for an exciting finals series.

Jordan Lisle has hit a really good patch of form.  He kicked another 4 goals, but it is his attack on the footy that has really good.  It creates options for the smalls and we look a far more dangerous forward line when Lisle is leaping at everything.

Hith Khan Haretuku (does he have the best hands in the comp) marking everything in sight it was difficult for the Hawks backline to clear the footy.

Again Ports defence was really strong.  Mascitti best on ground, but having Mihocek back in the side, there is a lot to be excited about!

Special mention to Peter Lauschie for his split Port Melbourne/Box Hill jumper that he wore while performing duties with 3WBC.  If I can find a photo of it, I'll post it up!

I thought Box Hill did us some favors with their undisciplined play. I think at least 3 goals can be attributed to that. Very tough game with not much in it at all, the shoreline not indicative of the closeness of the game.

Strong crowd from both contigents to see a moral lifting win. Need to win this week to go into the finals in good form! A very solid all round team performance.

She's a all-rounder that lady. She organised the banner, took photos of it not to mention all the long hours she puts in at the club from making the calendar, helping run the merchandise booth, game day photographer. Really puts in. Port is lucky to have some great volunteers.

Been a great player Pinwill & in my opinion was certainly talented enough to have played AFL football.

Unfortunately his legacy will carry his reputation of being undisciplined & has let Port & his team mates down on several occasions.

I can clearly remember his name being touted as a potential AFL player in his TAC cup days but was overlooked .

Did he carry any baggage as a kid ?

We might be from the bush. but we ain't green

I was asking the same question on the weekend, how much did his tough play had affected his AFL chances. Fortunately he has been good in the last couple of years and has found some discipline in his twilight years.
