Gannon calls for VFA greats admission into Football Hall of
Body:
Ken Gannon spoke on SEN this morning, asking the AFL to look at inducting more members from the VFA and other competitions around Australia who have made great contributions to Australian Football, and not just clocked up a number of AFL games. Several names were suggested, but I think Frank Johnson should be an automatic selection. Frank Johnson holds the distinction of being the only VFA representative player to achieve selection in two All Australian teams. Johnson was selected after the 1953 Adelaide and 1956 Perth Carnivals. He later also represented the VFL with distinction. Johnson played eight seasons for Port Melbourne, from 1950 - 1957, for a total fo 165 games including 8 Grand Finals for 1 Premiership (1953). Johnson won five Best & Fairest awards at Port Melbourne, a club record. At age 20, Johnson became the youngest player to ever win the J.J Liston Trophy. Johnson wa an All-Australian in 1953 & 1956 in the Australian National Football Council Carnival and represented the VFA in every year of his career at Port Melbourne. The Frank Johnson Medal is awarded for Best on Ground for the VFL's Representative Team.
