Gut - wrenching. After hitting the lead at the 27 minute mark we just needed to shut the game down... But it wasn't to be. Box Hill kicking the goal as the siren sounded. I thin Port will rue missed goals that were very gettable.
It's a bit raw at the moment but I'll gather my thoughts and try and review the YouTube coverage and post my thoughts after that.
I also thought Port would also win once they hit the lead in the last quater I watched a fiar bit of the game on the live stream.Pity the weather as crap and that must have effected the crowd which was pretty small even by current VFL standards.
Still what would you expect when 90% of football followers i Melbourne dont know the VFL finals exist due to lack of PR.
Fantastic game of footy that had everything. Interesting how supporters of opposing sides evaluate the game. Port supporters might feel missed goals cost them, but Box Hill would say they should have put the game to bed midway through the last quarter if they had kicked straight. Box Hill kicked 4 goals 9 in the final quarter.
I think the best team on the day won, but Port were unbelievably good to keep coming back from impossible positions. Probably just ran out of steam in the tie beaker.
Pity the game wasnt on Channel 7 - was a great advert for VFL footy.
Long day watching 2 games. At North port oval you could say box hill were the better side but can also say port very unlucky not to win. The night game was a throw to watching night footy at the old lakeside oval. Lights going off added to the drama. Seagulls were very good and can go all the way. The seagulls fear no one and if make it through to gf docklands will suit Williamstown even better.
Dissapointed that season was over but I think the most deserved team won on the day. For a moment I thought it was going to be the football Gods balancing the scales of justice by giving us this one to repay other games throughout the season that we should have won. Casey comes to mind 11 goals 23 behinds I think it was.
Will definetely miss the football this off season probably more than last season. I honestly think that on our day we compete with anybody and had the list to go very far IF things went our way - ie limited injuries, players playing to form etc etc. They are big IFs.
I think we are only about 4 top class players from being a heavy weight in 2019. Maybe a recognised goal kicker to keep Conway on his toes, a defender or two, some big bodies as well. Not the worst Port Me;lbourne season by any means but not overly succesfull. Id rate it a c + by Ports standards and as spoilt as we are - "other fans would be quick to say - be happy you made finals again, we never make finals".
On a final note VFA Georges horor run of predicting Port Melbourne games continues - and is getting a reputation at Port, on more than one occasion I have had the question asked - whose George tipped for today ! No more Port tipping Georgie Boy !
37 times Grand finalists
16 times premiers
21 times runners up - THE MIGHTY BOROUGH!
I'M PORT MELBURNE BORN,
I'M PORT MELBOURNE BRED,
I'LL BE PORT UNTIL I'M DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agree MegaA that Box Hill were the better team on the way. Still I really thought we'd done enough to pinch it!
For those who want to watch the match again:
...and Gary Ayres review of the game:
Should have just tried to score anything when we had the ball in our 50 even if it was a point make them score at least twice but ah well such is life.
