AFL players will have the same jumper number when they play in the VFL this year.

This is a tweet from Paul Amy...

AFL players will have the same jumper number when they play in the VFL this year. But it means VFL players at aligned clubs have had to give up their numbers. Example: new Sandy captain Brede Seccull was No 5 last year. He’ll wear No 49 this year.

Good lord... I think everything that can be taken from the aligned teams by the AFL has now been taken. The AFL has no respect at all for the VFL/VFA clubs.

What a f*****g disgrace.

No such problems for Williamstown, Port Melbourne, Werribee, Coburg or Frankston.
Totally agree Bearsman. Not surprised at all. That is typical arrogant AFL. Arrogant Football League.
How many players have departed Box Hill from last year and gone back to local clubs. Like to know how many from the aligned clubs have left from 18 season to head back to local footy.
Might see a total swing where players are more likely to go to a VFL standalone team than play second fiddle wearing number 78 or 84 at an aligned club. With the likes of Gibbons, Cavarra, Schultz, Corbett, Collins and Bewley being drafted and likely to do well at AFL you will find a lot more players won't hesitate in playing for the old VFA teams.

What remains that can taken..  I've given up caring. The quicker this souless competition becomes AFL 2's and the aligned clubs go thier own way,  whateve/whereever that be, the better.

If that does ever happen expect the standard of the football to drop, no tv coverage, limited media coverage publin interest and crowds to also substantially drop.

I wouldnt worry about the crowds dropping any more as they are pretty poor already and esp for a supposed "State League"!Most old VFA supporters like me have given up or passed on and are not being replaced

Even the Standalone clubs get very ordinary crowds compared to what they used to less than some of the local teams Ive watched.

The bloody shielas footy gets way better crowds than the VFL (sic) and thats where to AFL will put all their focus over the next few years.

Your right about the womens football - it leaves you with a bitter taste when you know that the VFL should be attracting better crowds than the women as they put out a far better product. The AFL has brainwashed its flock of sheep and neglected their 2nd best product. Womens football is so pupolar that it is making the VFL look insignificant.

Their is some hope regarding crowds and public interest though - Port Melbourne is up to 878 members and we still have over a fortnight before our first home game. A mere 3, 4 years ago Port would only of had around the 500 mark.

Frankston has gone from around 200 members to having 1,200 members in 2018.

Coburg currently is close to the 1000 mark.

TV rating have gone from around 30,000 to around a 50,000 weekly average.

These significant  increases indicate that it isn't all doom and gloom in terms of public interest.

Yeah this is another poor move for the competition.  Its disrepectful of the clubs list and imagine your leadership group all being up in the number 40s and 50s.  No thanks.

I'm not really sure what its not going to look like in the footy record. I guess the 'shell' clubs eg. Box Hill and Casey wouldn't really say anything about this but god I wish someone with some integrity at those type of clubs would crack the shits and make a stand.

AFL = Arrogant Football League who like to destroy every local league throughout the country.
By forcing the AFL listed players to wear their normal number and force VFL listed players top wear numbers 78, 85, 68 etc. will piss of those players off big time. Will look ridiculous when on some days most players will be wearing numbers over 50. What a PATHETIC joke.

Disrespectful indeed,as in popular opinion Afl listers dont play in the vfl, they languish in it.

When St Kilda forces Sandy to wear S Kilda jumpers the takover of the AFL clubs on their VFL aligned teams will be complete. Just a matter of when, not if... The only thing left to take after that is the club's names...

When the AFL decides the alignments will be finished, Preston, Casey, Box Hill, Sandy will become extinct.
