I very surprised at that appointment. He goes in and trys to kill football clubs as he did with Geelong and Adelaide.
And ESSENDON (my team!) That being said, it's a fantastic coup of having a former AFL Coach taking charge of a team in the VFL... but part of me is worried - he's current record suggests wherever he goes, the sides go down. Peter... in QLD

Heard that Ben Hart will be assisting Aryes? Any chance of him playing as well? I think he played SANFL this year?

Great pick up Port we need someone with great coaching experience plus very high profile.Hopefully he proves some people wrong that doubt his coaching qualities. He did get Geelong to a Grand final plus Adelaide to finals so he must not be too bad and as for Essendon he was not the coach as Sheedy was so that is a poor excuse, only time will tell and also you got to have the players as well to have a great team.Great for the V.F.L competion as well. Go Borough!

Ben Hart played for North Adelaide this year. Played in the loss to Centrals in the Grand Final. Port could use his experience on the field. Ayres might actually attract 5/6 good quality players for 2008.

His coaching record looks better than it is because he took over teams that played in a GF the previous year.

There's mixed reactions to this one, personally I would have thought Ayres was a good appointment, however I can assure you the hierarchy at the Crows couldn't get him out the door quick enough.Time will tell.

Inetersting to see which delisted players from afl lists end up. No doubt Port, Werribee, Frankston and North Ballarat will be pouncing. After the December draft the vfl stand alone clubs will be looking at this list of players available. What does Port need to recruit to improve further in 2008 ? What does Frankston require to shoot back into the finals ? What players do Werribee require to be competitive first up as a stand alone team ? What does the roosters require as a stand alone team not only to match what they did in 2007 but to improve another notch in 2008 ? There was a dozen players that played in the SANFL Grand Final this year that have played in the VFL. Maybe time for the vfl stand alone teams to entice some of the former vfl players back to VIC. I know $$ are a problems as the SA + WA clubs do splash a bit of it. Port Melbourne have a bit of cash so they could entice a few back like Jeremy Clayton, Gerard Bennett who have played for the Borough.

Matthew Clarke will return to Crows as part-time ruck coach.
