Williamstown - Prelim Final Chokers?
I'll be as popular as a wine stain on white carpet probably but there is no avoiding the fact that today was yet another loss for Williamstown in a Preliminary Final. They've caved in at Prelim Final stage in 2006, 2007 and now 2008. Great achievement to get there again, but when you fall at the last hurdle so frequently you surely need to analyse why it happens. The past two years much of the blame, at least from an outsiders perspective, was on the Magpies. To be blunt I dont think the Dogs have helped them that much this year either, barring perhaps Peter Street and Wayde Skipper - who probably won't be around next year. I think Williamstown have an exceptional list of VFL players, they have for most of this decade and the fact they've played in so many reserves premierships highlights their depth. Have they got too many guys in between VFL reserves and VFL senior standard? Do they take too long to blood their young guys? I think they only played two VFL listed debutants this year in the seniors - clearly the lowest of any VFL club. There seems to be a lot of faith in Brad Gotch, I'm not saying he's done a bad job but might they need a new voice in there? Port Melbourne look set to widen that gap next week as the most successful VFA/VFL club. I'm sure that grates on the nerves of the Seagulls faithful who've had their chances in recent times to close that gap.

You cant hide from the fact they've lost the prelim final in the last 3 years, but doesnt mean they're chokers. I'd be more worried if we'd finished top 2 in each year and not made the granny. Fact is willy hasnt been quite there each year during the season, and have done well to at least make the Prelims. I think last year was 3rd and 2006 we'd finished 4th.

Interesting that both teams the seagulls lost to in the 06 Geelong and 07 to Coburg Prelims both lost in the Grand Final. With 10 minute to go in the third quarter Port was still a long way from winning. Did the Frankston game emotionally drain Williamstown in the last quarter ? I think it must have taken something out of them. Still great effort by Port in the last quarter. I would not label Williamstow as chokers in Prelim Finals, but another loss next season you might wonder.

You should have finished top 2 this year. The fact Williamstown get close, but never close enough is the point I'm trying to make. There's surely something NQR when push comes to shove that means they're just a step behind where they need to be in order to be a premiership contender. Previously we might have blamed Collingwood - but we cant use that excuse this year.
Seeing as though we are being picky, we threw away top spot with that final round loss to Werribee. Check the ladder after Rd20. Williamstown were .13% ahead of Port, but obviously that one loss worse off.
Thanks for adding even more substance to my argument Dale!

Unless you didnt want other comments added.

They should have just rolled over in the semi and let frankston have a crack at port, only team to beat port in the last few months.
