VFA Expansion Article - from 1995
Hi Guys. While cleaning up my place at Hoppers Crossing on Saturday, I came across a 1995 Victorian Footballer. This little beauty had 3 pages on the proposed VFA expansion. I've scanned and uploaded the article here... Talking of expansions. The VFA was very close to a thrid division in the late 70s. Greensborough, East Ringwood, Vermont, Springvale were chased. If the VFA did have a third division and they could have had even four divisions by the late 90s if they went full bore to expand ? Who knows where the comp would be today. Also Moorabbin, Oakleigh and Coburg were talked about joining the then VFL and were pushed by the local councils. What could have been ??? If I can find the articles I will get them scanned and post them on.

I note the quote 'agreements have made with three clubs not seek licences this year' from Ken Gannon. What does this refer to?

escuse my South Australian ignorance... to me the VSFL was just a fancy name for the AFL reserves starting from 1992

West Torrens formed 1895 (merged woodville 1991)
Port Melbourne formed 1874

In 1992 the AFL got rid of the VFL (AFL) under 18s and replaced them with what we now know as the TAC Cup.

As part of a review/restructure of Victorian football in 1995, the VFA clubs were to lose their under 18s and be aligned with a TAC Cup side.

Because there were less TAC Cup sides, it meant either mergers or some VFA sides faxing the axe.

There was talk of mergers between Williamstown and Werribee, Coburg and Preston... there was even a stupid proposal of merging Port Melbourne and Williamstown and calling the side Yarra!

Eventually Dandenong Redlegs and Oakleigh bit the dust, while Prahran volunteered to 'step down' and become just an under 18s side (I think taking over from 'centrals'???).
