Doering could be on his way to Penguin
Body:
http://www.examiner.com.au/story.asp?id=311755
Sport front page Doering in demand as SA puts up a rival bid By TERRY MORRIS *LOGO:NTFL FOOTBALL * , Saturday, 15 October 2005 Penguin is battling a rival bid from South Australia in its endeavours to sign Jordan Doering as coach for next year. Two Blues president, Gary Carpenter said the lucrative offer from Port Adelaide in the SANFL may sway Doering but his club hadn't given up hope of signing him for 2006. "Our recruiting manager Greg McDonald had a very positive interview with Jordan this week and we have some job offers in mind for him," he said. Doering, a former best-and- fairest winner with the Tasmanian Devils, has also nominated for the AFL National Draft but at 26 years of age realises his chances of being selected are minimal. For the past two years Doering has played with the Essendon- alinged Bendigo Bombers in the VFL winning the best and fairest both times. This season he was also chosen in the VFL Team Of The Year. Carpenter said Doering had offered his assistance to Penguin in talking to some of the Essendon players who have been de-listed this week if required. Penguin has also spoken to Tasmanian Devils team-mates Jason Ling and Justin Plapp, who both started their careers at Penguin. Ling spent most of this season playing with the Burnie Dockers and was a key player in the premiership win last month while Plapp was the Devils' main goalkicker. Carpenter said the club was continuing to work overtime in its search for a playing coach to lift Penguin up the NTFL ladder. ¤¤¤ Penguin has allayed fears that its football ground is to be closed down for a car park development. President Gary Carpenter had a commitment from the Central Coast Council that the ground would remain for at least the next five years. There has been growing speculation that the football ground will close down and will be transformed into a car park to accommodate the needs of the popular Penguin market which is nearby. Carpenter said the council was developing a cultural plan which eventually could see a recreation ground developed at the Dial Range reserve, but it wouldn't happen before 2011. ¤¤¤ Ulverstone lost one of its best known sportsmen this week with the death of Wayne Pearce. Pearce, 60, died after an eight- year battle with cancer and his funeral will be held on Monday at 2pm. A prominent footballer and cricketer, Pearce was the NWFU's leading goalkicker in 1964 with 57 goals during his career with the Robins and he also spent one season with East Devonport. He was a prolific batsman in the Leven Cricket Assocation playing for Castra and then for many seasons was captain of Ulverstone's A Reserve team in the NWTCA. His son Jason is co-coach of the Ulverstone Cricket Club this season. Pearce was a member of a strong sporting family with his brothers Joe, Len and Geoff all best-and-fairest winners with the Ulverstone Football Club and another brother Don was a former Tasmanian cricket representative. In later years Pearce had a successful stint in harness racing. He was a strong supporter of many sporting events in the Ulverstone area.
