PROMISING Tassie Devils forward Brodie Moles will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the VFL season so as not to jeopardise his chances in the AFL draft.

Moles, 21, has been one of the few shining lights this season playing across half-forward as the Devils head towards their first wooden spoon.

But Devils coach Daryn Cresswell said yesterday Moles would join Paul Koulouriotis (hamstring) and Cameron Thurley (hip) on the sidelines for the rest of the year.

Moles has kicked 20 goals from 13 games in his debut VFL season, but will have a cartilage clean-up on his knee as soon as possible.

Cresswell said he believed Moles would be invited to the October 2-5 AFL draft camp at the AIS in Canberra.

"When he does he has to go there and test extremely well, and he knows that, so it is important he does his rehab properly and gives himself every chance," Cresswell said. "The next two or three months are very important for him."

He said missing the final three games, starting with the Casey Scorpions at Bellerive on Saturday, would not harm Moles' draft chances.

"I wouldn't have thought so, he's done enough," Cresswell said. "He is a very good player and I think he is AFL material. He's got a lot of attributes in his speed, agility, he's a very good decision-maker, he kicks goals, and has a good motor.

"He is obviously a bit of a late developer, but I think he has got all the attributes to play AFL footy."

At the request of AFL recruiters, Cresswell will blood more Mariners this Saturday in Tom Bellchambers, Kieran McShane and Aaron Joseph.

"Like Alex Grima and Jaye Bowden, the situation is we are in a development stage and we can help the kids get over the line to get drafted," Cresswell said. "Certainly it has been a poor season on-field, but it would be nice to get a few of those guys drafted.

"If they don't get drafted, we are putting a bit of experience in them, and they will know what it takes to play VFL footy for next season."
