Coburgs Grandstand burnt down?
Caught a bit of the news out of the corner of my eye late Friday, about a fire at a sports oval in Coburg. The presenter referred to it as a Soccer field, but on the footage, I could see a sign referring to it as Proton Oval, which is what Coburg City oval was being called. Has anyone heard anything about this ?

I work in Brunswick so will head down and take a look this lunchtime.

Are Coburg/Calder still going to be able to play there in 2004? I couldn't imagine the Tigers been able to find a replacement ground at this stage. Shame, not a bad stand that one, and doesn't leave many places under cover to watch the footy there!

How extensive IS the damage ons ? Does it include the rooms and social club etc ?

I've watched a fair bit of footy from up there. It was a fantastic grandstand, its size meant you weren't sitting all squashed up with other people and you knew you'd be able to get some cover if it rained. As a guess Windy Hill could be a back up option for Calder and Punt Rd for Coburg. Hopefully the Coburg Oval can have some temporary things set up and the games go ahead there though. The Sunday Age said Calder Cannons lost nine years of memorabilia, I'm not sure if that included their 2 premiership trophies.

Further news and photos of just how close the fire got can be found on Phil Cleary's site. http://www.philcleary.com.au/vfl_2004_fire_grandstand.htm Looks like Coburg will be playing out of Punt Road.

A rumour I heard at their practice match at Punt Road today was that they will not play at Coburg City Oval untill Anzac Day. For the first 3 rounds they will play all away games and if they play the sides again later in the season that game would then become a Coburg home game.

Move that to Shepley and Round 15 from Shepley to Coburg. Instead of that idea why not play Round 2 at Punt and pull one of the other Punt games back to Coburg. Not sure when Football Vic will decide, I guess they have a couple of weeks still.

Resurrecting an older thread, but can someone confirm whether the Coburg Grandstand repairs are now complete? The fire was back in 2004, and last time I watched a game at the Lions den earlier this season, part of the stand was still sealed off. If not, what is taking so long?
