I agree. The way he he presented himself has come across as being quite professional, have read a lot of the articles where he has been quoted on the Mercury website.
Interestingly nobody has mentioned Lance Spaulding at Tasmania - one for Thylacine, gibbke and co to rate. Had a very tough and unrewarding job to do after Cresswell's resignation.
Missing the guys and gals from tassie. Hope they still keep in touch. I;m thinking the all may be a little dissappointed with the withdrawal of their team.

You couldnt go past Ayres. Taking a stand alone team to a Grand final and also the improvement and development of the younger players has been amazing. His knowledge, positivity and style of football he has his team playing is first class. Fitzgerald again has been fantastic and Brett Lovett has got every ounce of ability out of his side. My question is how do people think Williamstown would have went if Gary Ayres was there coach????????

Adrian Hickmont - Bendigo Bombers
Bearry Mitchall - Box Hill
Greg Hutcherson - Casey
Jade Rawlings - Coburg
Gavin Brown - Collingwood
Brett Lovett - Frankston
Leigh Tudor - Geelong
Gerald Fitzgerald - Nortth Ballarat
David Teague - Northern Bullants
Gary Ayres - Port Melbourne
Andy Lovell - Sandringham
Simon Atkins - Werribee
Brad Gotch - Williamstown
Ratings out of ten- Mitchell 4, Hutchison 7.5, Rawlings 6, Brown 3, Lovett 9, Tudor 4.5, Fitzgerald 8, Teague 7.5, Ayres 9.5, Lovell 5.5, Atkins 8, Gotch 7.5

These ratings are before the Grand Final.
Top marks to Ayres with Lovett next best with getting Frankston within a whisker to the Prelim. Fitzy and Atkins have both done a great job this season. Greg Hutchison has got Casey above expectations. Teague did well as a captain coach which is rare these days and Gotch was consistent.
Lowest goes to Gavin Brown with a poor brand of footy which is plain boring and Collingwood were average.
I have given Lovett a nine for the way he got Frankston playing in the two finals. Why wasn't Tassie's two coaches included ?

This thread should be called coaches ratings for 2008 and not Ayres.
Its been 2 years since your post george.

What are your ratings now for the guys that coached in 2010 ?

Fitzy 10 (Three in a row is a great feat)
Gary Ayres 8 (Speach of speaches in the SF v Box Hill. Another epic classic tussle against Box Hill in a SF)
Peter German 8 (rates 10 for his fire and ferocious looks)
Brad Gotch 8 (rates 1.5 for finals success)
Brendan Bolton 8 Did pretty well in 2010)
Shannon Grant 7.5 for coaching 10 for drinking
Simon Goosey 5 (will improve with a better list next seaon)
Gavin Brown 5 (rates zero for carrying hacks like Fraser)
Coburg's coach 3.5 (underachieved)
Geelong's coach 5 (same as Coburg)
Bluey McKenna 6.5 (were competitive and has unearthed some good kids)
Simon Atkins 5 (been a loyal coach but not a good year in 2010)
Andy Lovell 4.5 (after a great start was a disappointment)
David Teague 9 (Great fianls series but found the roosters too good. Good sportsmanhip embracing Fitzy and congratulating him after the GF)

Gerard Fitzgerald... 3 premierships says it all

Coming 2nd 3rd or 4th is irrelevant

It's premierships that count...nothing else

We can give coaches 10/10 for getting a team into the finals...close to a Grand Final...whatever....but in 20 years time we'll look at the records to see who won the flag...not who came close or had a good year

Has Gary committed to the Burra faithful or is he off to Werribee ?

Ayres is no chance to go to Werribee.

He is after a mentoring role at AFL level particulary at a club where he can spend alot of time with youngsters coming through the system.

He is not all interested in an aligned club.
I believe he met Port officials recently (tuesday) but not sure what eventuated.

Ryan McMahon is super keen to play and will do preseason at Port.
Apparantly where he has worked the past decade is about to cease business in feb so when he finds a new job he will find out if he can play VFL in 2011.

Would Fitzy ever consider any role at an AFL club???

He says that he is very happy where he is Burra.
It would take a brave man to get involved on the AFL merry go round.
There is no doubt that he would be a very good coach at AFL level, you only have to look at the duds that are there now.
AFL clubs are not prepared to give unknowns outside the AFL a chance because of huge sponsorships & corporate donations.
Many would say he is too old at 53 but Bart Cummings is 82.
