Cleary dumps on Stillman
Just read Phil Cleary's column in Inside Footy this week and he really dropped a bucket on Martin Stillman over the VFA/VFL name debate. Phil Cleary is pretty passionate about reverting to the VFA but I wonder how much support there is among the clubs???

I would back a VFA man through and through like VFA icon Phil Cleary against a johnnie come lately seat warmer like Stillman FFS the VFA was NEVER the VFL in fact the VFA was the father of all the Victorian VFL/AFL clubs. Why do the VFL think they have such a poor image in the media and general footballing public.? Pleading with former VFA supporters like me and thousands more like me to come back( in the Football Record (sic) have no chance at all of happening Mr Stillman. From hardly missing a Sandy game for 40 years I now cant be bothered to drag myself to many games in this now souless and directionless competition and I know many other fromer VFA supporters that are the same. In any sporting entertaiment business like football once you lose the core support they are gone forever and you are finished - just ask the basketball people.,

I won't comment on the article as I am yet to read it, however I was disapointed with Peter Schwabs article in last weeks Footy Record that also weighed in on this debate. I'm pretty sure Port Melbourne would back a name change back to our VFA.

In Stillman's defence he's been at the VFA/VFL for a long time. I can remember having a beer with him at the Liston in around 1990, so he's been there at least 15 years, maybe even 20. I don't think you could call him a seat warmer
this now souless and directionless competition
Totally agree, you could count the number of VFL games I've been to this year on one hand, the competition is going backwards quickly.

Well, if a fan as informed and committed as you isn't going to the footy any more, we're in trouble. Please tell us why you're so disenchanted, Footyman.
Well, if a fan as informed and committed as you isn't going to the footy any more, we're in trouble. Please tell us why you're so disenchanted, Footyman.
- Lack of atmosphere at VFL games. When you go to some of these suburban league matches that don't cost you a cent to get into and have a crowd three deep around the fence showing genuine passion you realise how soleless the VFL now is. Port Melbourne home games seem to draw about 800 people and you know something is wrong when 10 Nanna's on the boundary are making the most noise! - Lack of interest in watching so many of an AFL clubs young players develop which is of no interest to me, or watching an AFL clubs has beens play out the last year of their contract. - Poor scheduling, nothing 'adventurous' - no night games, no double headers (why not try one in the first week of finals at TEAC?), no twilight games, no morning games. Not even gutsy enough to try the grand final in a different timeslot - Stillman and Co will be happy to get 8,000 there again this year. - AFL Victoria hang their hat on them being different cos of the "kick backwards, play on" rule - woopy doo. They'll have to do better than that to get me excited. - The governing body don't seem determined to improve anything about the competition - heck we've had the same 'experience the difference' slogan for years. The same logo for years. The competition labelled "VFL" - which it is not. Come finals are we going to have a big TV screen at TEAC Oval? Will we have something different to entertain the crowd at half time? Doubtful! The competition needs some spark...its being held together by a life support system right now.

Cleary's dead right on this one! Usually is! Can't believe Stillman can actually try to argue the VFL name is any good?!? Clearly compromises the comp! Could you imagine the administrators of the VFA in 1896 reaction to the fact that the VFA ending up borrowing the breakaway leagues name and logo! The VFL, sorry, the AFL-VFL has always been the nasty big brother to the VFA, sorry, VFA-VFL, and it's insulting that the VFA carries the League name! It's just such a no-brainer to me. The VFL, or AFL Victoria, are honestly so dis-interested in truly marketing the comp, either that, or they are an honest bunch with completely no sense of imagination or flare! Do they see working at the VFA-VFL as merely a stepping stone to bigger and better things with the VFL-AFL? Just as a side, Paul Amy also wrote about this site thinking sacking Cleary from the ABC commentary being a shocker, and Reitz just said what he said at the start of the year . . . Phil polarizes people. What a FANTASTIC reason to get him behind the mike again. Do you know what, it hasn't been a concious decision of mine, i just realised the other day, when i tape the VFL, i fast forward to Phil's bit, and that's all i watch. What a disgrace. As i said, i realised this is just what i subconciously started doing! It just doesn't interest me any more. Lucky i've got lots of old tapes. Rich Reitz has ABSOLUTELY KNACKERED UP the coverage. The rotating spesh comments has been an ABSOLUTE disaster, and no longer having the VFL round up is TERRIBLE! The coverage has gone SO far backwards this year under Reitz, geez i hope the ratings have dived! The ABC have gotta get rid of this guy. NO IDEA! BAH! Where'd we be without this site, Inside Footy, local papers and the VFL show on SEN!

Lots of good points there, Footyman, particularly in relation to the marketing of the VFL. They do a dismal job of it. They need to start looking at things differently. Have you heard the promo ads on radio? Hopeless! I'd suggest they could do worse than hire Phil Cleary as their marketing manager. Love him or hate him he's a charismatic character who makes things happen.

Not sure about club support, what does everyone else think? I don't think I am right to make a comment on what clubs think because this is only my third year of involvement in the competition.
