Merged post:
Good effort by Port winning at Casey. Must be a real chance to beat Coburg especially at Teac Oval. 12/10 rule for Coburg and they will miss Morgan who was very impressive early against Geelong but got injured. Port will need to stop Coburg's small men and the supply to Schulz and Bowden. However they can win if they get off to a good start and show the same spirit as they have in the last 2 weeks. Will be a tougher hurdle than Casey but Teac Oval does square even the contest. Sandy v North Ballarat will be a good tussle and the unpredicatable roosters can win if they turn up to play. Amazing comeback against bendigo. Taoed the game and will watch it during the week.
From the Herald-Sun:
Port Melbourne coach Saade Ghazi said he selected a better balanced running side and this made a difference against the Scorpions. "They had a lot of tall players in and that probably helped us a little bit, took a few runners out," Ghazi said. "Troy Makepeace didn't play but they still had their 12 St Kilda guys. To win there on their home ground after losing to them twice during the year was a good performance." Port midfielder David Spriggs continued his hot form with 23 possessions. "His last month he has probably been in our best one or two players. "He's been terrific, he is really hard and tough. Port on-baller David Robbins had about 25 touches in what Ghazi felt was an all-round team effort.
Great game of footy, obviously dissapointed as a Scorps supporter. Both teams had plenty of opportunity to put the game away/win the game. but not all was lsot this year for us. The second half from port was the difference, they were able to completely shut down any run and drive we had, and lock us over the scoreboard side of the ground in the 3rd 1/4, Very hard to score from there with the breeze blowing the way it did. Then they held off the last efforts from the scorps, and with us pushing forward hard, were able to fly the ball straight down the ground too easily on a couple of occasions. Spriggs played a fantastic game and thought he was the most damaging with his skills, a class player, and probably best on. But I also thought the Obst played one of the best 30 minutes of footy ive seen in a long time in the last 1/4. It's not every day you see a bloke on the last line of defence control a game of footy. And this was exactly what he did, a true capatains effort. Nahas and Mathews had some good battles throughout the day, but didn't play on each other as much as what I would have thought, Mathews spent longer deep forward then what I would have thought. I think Eddy followed Nahas for much of the game. For us, we struggled to string goals after Watts went off, I thought Brooks was gonna play a blinder after the first quater, but he never absoloutely dominated. Was impressed with young Panozza who ahs only had a handful of Senior games, one of the few who backed themselves as the game wore on. We sorely missed Fergusons drive out of the back line, and would have made it harder for Bonnadio to do those couple of grabs and ground work he did, whchh proved costly. I really believe Port can push and possibly beat Coburg next weekend, they will be back on home soil so anything is possible. Wouldn't it be great for them to get another crack at Willy in 2 weeks time. Well overall a positive season for the Scorps and one to build on, we should be eyeing off top 4 as a goal for next season, and the experience gained by the young guys this season will hold them in better stead next season. Probably have to hard chase a Key defender and Key forward though, as a fair chance Watts will be in the St. Kilda line up next season, and I would be dissapointed if ferguson spends the season with us again. (hopefully getting a run with St. Kilda also)
