Round 12 - North Ballarat v Williamstown
Half-time score North Ballarat 5.4 11.5 . . Williamstown 0.2 2.6 . .

Williamstown another team to make the horrid trip to Nth Ballarat and get smashed. I think that makes it seven out of seven at home for them winning by 47 points. If they finish top 2 they will probably get a home final and be tough to beat. Willy must have struggled without Street.
I always thought that we would struggle without Streeter, and add the fact that it would have been close to snowing in Ballarat (I say that because it was bloody cold in Geelong), this was going to be tough.
I thought the ruck duels were about even (BTW to his credit Peter Street was at the game). NB really did their homework and closed down many of Willy's usual avenues. I was impressed that they had the players to carry out the instructions particularly in the first half. Williamstown actually won the second half but that's no help when you are so far behind and half time. It was really annoying sitting near the Casey Radio broadcast point (seating was at a premium) when they continually named wrong players. At one point Stephenson was named in the call when he was on the bench.! As long as they get the scores right (and they did that better than the NB scoreboard attendant) those not at the game are none the wiser but it's very frustrating when you're at the game.

When your 9 goals down at half time you have an idea of the score, and why would you want to keep looking at it ???

I'm with you it is very irritating listening to people commentate the players incorrectly and by the sound of it you werent able to get away from it! I think thats the area the Casey boys particularly Chris Weaver need to improve, just a bit too much guesswork when he doesnt know the player. Contrast to the ABC with a pro like Donegan if he cant pick the player out he masks it beautifully.

I mark myself very harshly, and if I get more than one player identification wrong per quarter then I put it down as a bad term.

I listened to just under a quarter at the Collingwood v Willy game last week and there were more than a handful of errors. The reception wasnt great so I gave up listening it was easier to watch without it on. To be fair to you guys, Collingwood did have a few players who looked alike and you blokes wouldve been calling from a long way away in the top deck of the Heroes Stand. Hopefully you guys get some of your audio synched to the vision then you'll be able to assess your accuracy. But he often seems to make some general comment if he cant pick the player out - like "that kick doesnt really get them anywhere" or "they're under pressure here Werribee" until he can see the players number or the next player has possession. The only people who know if you guys stuff up are the handful of people at the game. Although with the vision and some of your calls on this site now we'll all pick it up!!!

People who like to criticise need to appreciate what conditions both stations call under at some of these VFL venues. I personally had a shocker, and happy to put my hand up yesterday at North Ballarat. We arent professionals, most of us do it for the love the game, it isnt an easy gig. It was the first time we had been to North Ballarat and our first time broadcasting the Roosters in '08. We didnt have a choice of broadcast position in amongst the faithful is always a task. To say we did a terrible job yesterday was harsh.. Mistakes are always going to happen.. certain venues really enjoy our atmosphere we add a social club.. To the disappointed Williamstown supporters, maybe they would be better off directing their criticism to their team who were disappointing in the 1st half!! Second Half was top notch and Willy kicked themselves out of it in the 3RD. Fitzy mentioned Street was the difference will make for an interesting battle come finals time

The distance from the play, 'dead' pockets and no atmosphere mean its the hardest place in which to fill gaps in the commentary, something which I think all of our callers - and, dare I add, what I've heard of 3XX - do well. I don't think Peter Holden's comment can be understated - TV is a different medium, FCS! Peter Donegan has different camera angles from which to pick up the play plus the benefit of the footage itself doing the talking. (Personally, I thought Collingwood v Willy was my least enjoyable call for the year, but for a reason other than accuracy).
