Cats VFL coach Dale Amos yesterday said the club was carefully monitoring the recovery of its new youngsters, but was confident two were on the verge of playing in the coming weeks.

Rookie midfielder Bryn Weadon is expected to play next week after missing yesterday's clash with tightness sustained at training during the week.

Fellow rookie Adam Varcoe will miss next week, but Amos said the younger brother of Travis Varcoe was not too far away from pulling on the boots.

Steven Motlop, the younger brother of Port Adelaide's Daniel Motlop, will not play until at least the second half of the season after undergoing two shoulder reconstructions.

Amos said the club was also managing the preseason workload of 2008 J.J. Liston Medallist James Podsiadly, who did not play in yesterday's 47-point victory against Bendigo.

With five practice matches, there is no urgency to play the new skipper yet, but Amos did not rule out the key forward making his first Geelong appearance next week.

"We'll sort of manage him, he's obviously a little older, and we don't need to have a look at him to know what were going to get," he said.

"W'ell manage him depending on how he's feeling and the way we think we can get him best through the pre-season to have him ready for round one.

All players got through yesterday's first practice match of the season unscathed.
