VFL News 11/2
Body:
Bit of news from the VFL: Frankston have been able to recruit Stingrays player Marc Holt. Both Springvale and Frankston were keen on last year’s centre half forward in the TAC Cup Team of the Year but he was destined for Cranbourne in the MPNFL. Apparently has had a change of mind and will join the Dolphins. Could be handy up forward for Frankston and is solid overhead. ------------------------------- Springvale are in desperate need for a ruckman after missing out on Ryan O’Connor. Having won a Magarey Medal in the SANFL, where he played for three years, O’Connor last week signed with Coburg, to be coached by ex-Bomber teammate David Flood. Springvale coach Graeme Wright told Leader that the news was “Extremely disappointing. Up until this time last week we thought he was coming to play for us. We've more or less thought the same since the middle of November”. It’s bad luck for Springvale who obviously thought he was going to their club. I might comment more about the issue at a later time. On the positive side, Springvale have regained Daniel Rigg (26 yr old, 66 VFL senior games), Josh Taylor (21 yr old, 17 VFL senior games, played at Hampton Park last year) and Shannon O'Brien (ex Melbourne listed player delisted end of 2001, originally from Gippsland Power, good runner but was very light when on AFL list). If you are tall and can play footy maybe you should ring Springvale Footy Club. -------------------------------- The Cranbourne Leader has an exclusive report that Springvale may be on the move. A new oval to be developed for VFL football standard at a cost of about $6m could be built in Cranbourne in time for the 2006 season. The report contains a lot of “no comments” from Springvale officials, while Ken Gannon said “a lot of hurdles have to be cleared” and that “Springvale would want to be part of the future, rather than part of the past”. The city of Casey is rapidly growing and Springvale have not had a true home since they stopped playing at Newcomen Rd prior to the AFL alignments with VFL clubs which started in 2000. The report also suggests that the club could change its name to the Casey Scorpions as a part of the move. Check out Inside Football’s next edition for more cos Paul Amy is one of the journalists who wrote the Leader article. ----------------------------- Bendigo’s QEO lights are set for their first night footy match on March 12th when two AFL clubs play a practice match at the ground. Should be interesting because two VFL night matches are scheduled for the ground this year.
