NORTH Melbourne forward Corey Jones was the star of the show in the VFL yesterday, leading premier North Ballarat to its first win of the season. The Roosters, who had the bye last week, responded from a 78-point Round 1 thrashing at Port Melbourne with a dogged 14-point win against Sandringham at a windswept Trevor Barker Oval.

Jones, 28, who has played 146 games for North, had 27 disposals, took six marks and booted two goals playing forward and in defence and will come under consideration for Friday night's game against Collingwood at Etihad Stadium.

"Hopefully I can get back up (in the seniors), but that's the coach's call. I'm just pleased to get a couple of kicks. That's all I can do," Jones said.

Roosters coach Gerard FitzGerald said Jones's leadership was vital in a scrappy game.
