The VFL's biggest threat: overflows
Body:
With VFL requiring list sizes to be between 42 and 45 players for aligned clubs, plus the dropping back of up to 18 AFL listed players we are in a position where very good players are playing reserves footy, while other players who work very hard during the summer have to sit out and play local footy. The situation involving Glenn Robertson and Ben Phibbs only highlights the frustration players must feel by being subject to lack of options created by lack of spots for VFL players in senior teams and AFL clubs influences. In many cases youngsters are given automatic games because they are on AFL lists, while better, or arguably more deserving VFL listed players are relegated into reserve sides. The mass exit of Bullants players last year highlights the impact of Carlton's involvement. The VFL has to act by creating a policy where no more than a dozen AFL listed players can play in a senior VFL side each week. The results of this would only be better for the competition. Firstly, VFL would be more appealing and hopefully players can be retained on VFL lists for longer. The composition of the teams will see decent pressure among AFL and VFL listed players for senior games. The reserves would also benefit. Otherwise the VFL seniors will become a carbon copy of the old AFL reserves, while the VFL reserves will become a competition dominated by young players who stick around for only a year or two before leaving. When you go to games this week count how many VFL listed players are in the sides. Even worse count how many 'unknowns' are in there. I would support a half/half AFL/VFL policy if implemented. Thoughts?
