Top 5 favourite VFA games attended

Top 5 favourite games attended

A tough question but would be interesting to see which games whether they are finals or home ands away matches. List your five matches with a small summary.

My top five but not in any order. There have been many other favourite games but these five stick out for me

1976 VFA 1st Division Grand Final Port Melbourne v Dandenong
Typified the VFA from the grand era. Tough, big crowds, entertaining and some great footy too.
1982 VFA 2nd Division Grand Final Northcote v Caulfield at Toorak Park
Barracking for Northcote this was a ripper of a game and great result. First flag for 21 years.
1976 Home and away game Sunshine v Northcote at Skinner Reserve
Northcote trailed by almost five goals but kicked 5 goals in about 3 1/2 minutes to steal victory. Miracle win.
1990 VFA Grand Final Sopringvale v Williamstown at Princes Park
The seagulls trailed by 34 points after a few minutes into the last quarter but stage a magnificent comeback to win. Billy Swan kicked the sealer.
1976 VFA 2nd Division Grand Final Mordialloc v Williamstown
Mordialloc was hot favourites but the seagulls gave them a hiding by 57 points in a tough, bruising game. Good crowd that made Toorak Park a special place come September.

A bit hard to narrow it down to just 5 vfa.

Since you have asked for the top 5 VFA games attended, I have stuck to pre-1996.

In no particular order:

1984 Second Division Grand Final, Box Hill vs Oakleigh. How can you go past seeing your team win its first flag - by 23 goals?

1978 Box Hill vs Williamstown. Box Hill hadn't won for nearly 2 years and was 14.3(87) at quarter-time. The crowd of about 1,500 made the noise of 10,000.

1989 Home and Away, Port Melbourne vs Box Hill. Box Hill's first ever win at Port Melbourne. I think the final scores were Box Hill 19.14(128) to Port 18.18(126). A real high standard VFA game and unbelievably tense fnish.

1988 Home and Away, Preston vs Box Hill. Box Hill's greatest ever comeback. Preston led by 55 points in time on in the 3rd quarter but from then Box Hill kicked 13 goals to zero (including 10 in the last quarter) to win comfortably. Brett Cooper kicked the goal to put the Mustangs in front.

1983 Home and Away, Box Hill vs Oakleigh. Last round of the season, these Clubs played huge games in the last round of the season at Box Hill in 1983, 1984 and 1986. In 1983 they were playing for 4th spot. The biggest ever crowd at Box Hill, officially 6,200 and it certainly was bigger than the "Buckley game" in 2005. Fantastic atmosphere. Oakleigh kicked clear in the last quarter but the Mustangs got their revenge in 1984 and 1986.

Gee Mustang, what a pity, i wasnt at the 1978 game at Box Hill so cant put it on my list !!!

For me its,
1985 Preston v Williamstown
Williamstown won by 9 points ending Prestons 23 match unbeaten run. Heroic efforts from Cahill, Kershaw and Wheeler in the last quarter. Willy had been thrashed by Preston in each of the past 3 years.
1996 Round 1 Williamstown v Werribee
Williamstowns first win since 1994 and played against the team that the VFA wanted Willy to merge with in the off season. Highly charged and large passionate crowd - Willy defence dug in against the wind to hold off the Tigers.
1976 2nd Div Prelim Williamstown v Frankston
Willy won by 2 points after trailing by 28 at 3 1/4 time and by up to 40 points during game. About 8,000 attended and you could hear a pin drop as Mark
Cross lined up from about 30 metres out on a slight angle to put Willy ahead very deep into the last quarter.
1990 Grand Final - Williamstown v Springvale - as per vfa above
1985 Grand Final - Sandringham (14.16) v Williamstown (13.16)
Result sucked (from a Willy perspective) but what a day - perfect sunny weather, Pretto bagging 7 in the last quarter of the Div 2 Granny, Ron James playing as a 14 year old for Willy, Mark Eaves marking everything in the first term, heavy bumps, and scoreless chaos for the last 5 minutes of the game in front of the Williamstown goals.

It's very hard to pick 5 but here goes.

1.My best ever day at the footy was Port v Williamstown Prelim final 2008.

At half time when Patrick Rose booted the ball into willy road my heart sank to be honest and thought gee we really need to find something.

As the 3rd quarter went on it became very tense this game to me had everything i ever wanted to see in a game of footy.

Fantastic weather big crowd lots of goals big tackles and both teams really playing there heart out and not to mention a huge hit on Sam Dyer as he ran into goal deep in the last quarter.

In the rooms waiting for Ryan ''Shooter'' Mcmahan to arrive from doing his pre match interview it was like a grand final the noise in the room when the Burra sang the song i can honestly say i had a tear in my eye due to pure happiness.

A day i will never forget.

2.Port v Box HIll 2002 home and away..... Port were down by 45 points and came back to win.

3.Port v Tasmania 2003 2nd semi..... I recall filming at Optus oval doing a TAC final and i had brought my mini tv along so i could watch the game.

After Tassie kicked away Port really had to dig deep and right near the end of the 3rd quarter Nick Gill took a mark turned around a kicked a goal which made the scores.. Port 75 to Tassie 98.

Michael Ferrito marked and goal 5 mins into the last quarter to put Port 15 points down.

Then a few mins later Ian Callinan marked near the boundary and kicked a great goal which put tassie up again by 25.

Few moments later Ryan Shooter Mcmahan marked and goaled which put Port down by 16.

At the 13 min mark Nick Gill marked in the square and kicked a goal which put Port 10 points down.

Then at the 14 min mark Jeremy Clayton kicked one of the goals of the year on the boundary to put the Burra 4 points down.

At this stage the 10,000 plus Tassie crowd were getting very nervous and the crowd level went up.

at 18 min mark Ryan Shooter Mcmahan kept the pressure on ran at the player with the ball and caused a turn over and kicked it inside 50 to Clinton Alleyway who went back and drilled another goal which put the Burra Ahead.

But having said all this to me the man who won Port Melb the game was rob cheevers he was one out with Jason Cribbs and needed to come in and spoil the ball make a contest and that he did.

The ball then got kicked out of Tassies forward line and Michael Stevens ran the ball and booted a long left foot goal which gave Port a win to remember.

3.Port v werribee 2002 Tony Lockett day another amazing come back 8 goals down in the 2nd quarter.

04.Prelim final 2002 another game that had everything Port hanging on to win in front of the biggest crowd i'v seen for a game at Port melbourne.

5.1992 qual final Williamstown v Prahran first time in the history of VFA it went to extra time.

The players were not sure what was happening Gazi kicked 5 goals for the game and during extra time Jullian Shanks kicked a goal from 50 which was a goal but the goal umpire gave it a point saying it shaved the post.

The following week this goal umpire was sacked.

Prahran hung on to win by 5 points i think.

So there you have it hope you enjoyed my top 5.

That Prahran qualif final was awesome. I remember Brian Taylor commenting that he was stunned when the goal umpire called the Shanks shot a point. Prahran probably the better team that year, but the mud suited 'Town in the prelim final 2 weeks later.

For all you Willy supporters out there I was actually working at the Willy vs Prahran game and was standing next to the goal post when Julian Shanks kicked that goal which was called a point. I can honestly say that it was a goal. No doubt in my mind at all. I was underneath the ball as it snuck through for a goal and was stunned when the umpire said it hit the post. All the people near me behind the goals couldnt believe what was happening. The Willy supporters went nuts and for good reason, I swear it was a goal.

Even now when I see that game on video I can see myself and all the crowd behind the goals just simply stunned.

burraburger, if it had been called a goal it would have levelled the score and presumably would have meant another 10 minutes of extra time - i recall it was already getting fairly dark. I've got the game on tape and from go to wo it was a fabulous game - the Brian Taylor v Simon Lloyd clash was good.

I have always believed that it was called a point because it was very dark and the lights wernt able to be turned on. It was also running late on TV.

#1 Sandy vs Moorabbin GF 1962 Zebras won by 1 point after being over 40 points down at 3/4 time.!

#2 First ever VFA Sunday game Brunswick vs Coburg with the Gillon Oval packed to the rafters.

#3 1976 Port vs Dandenong GF = #3 Dandenong vs Port 1967 both very rugged games

#4 Sandy vs Oakleigh relegation game in the 1970s this game had everything - great crowd exciting footy,Alf Bues reported for striking an umpire and brawls galore plus part of the boundry fence falling down during the game.

#5 VFA defeating Tassie in the 1960s at Launceston a very high standard game with Max Papley,Keith Burns,Hugh Mitchell ,Alan Morrow among the best players for the VFA who won after a hard fought last quarter.

1. Sandy V Oakleigh 1976..the relegation match...I was on the scoreboard that day...the ground was packed...Sandy won...Oakleigh got relegated...Peter Pettigrew from Oakleigh couldn't attend the tribunal the following week as he had a punctured lung and broken ribs

2. 1985 Grand Final...after years in the wilderness watching Port, Preston Oakleigh and Dandenong dominate the Zebras finally did it in a cliffhanger over Willy

3. Sandy V Willy 2007 I think Finals match...a home final for Sandy...Willy got out to a good lead but in the last 1/4 Sandy fought back and Shane Valenti kicked a goal in time on to give Sandy the lead...in the last passage of play, the ball came down the beach wing, Paul Licuria came off the interchange and was unmarked...took a mark and kicked the winning goal...not a good result for sandy but it really was a great match

4. Dandenong V Sandy at Shepley Oval sometime in the 70's...I remember an incident when Ian Cooper took a mark in the forward pocket....a Redleg supporter was giving him heaps...Coops got the ball and threw it at him and hit the guy in the face....the guy then tried to jump the fence and take him on...little did he know that Colin Cooper was also playing and had he tried to belt Ian Cooper then I think the guy would would have woken up in Dandenong hospital..

5. 2004 Grand Final...beating Port Melbourne in a Grand Final...don't need to say anything else...Pure and utter bliss!

Sandy. The most successful club in the past 30 years
