Victoria Park remembered
Body:

With the expectation that Collingwood's VFL home games are to be played at Victoria Park next year, it is always good to read how other people remember the place.

A LAWYER was criticised for using Collingwood supporters as a defence for his Geelong client's feral behaviour during an incident where he called a pub manager a "f--king poofter".

Camden Wilkie, 50, was banned from Ocean Grove's Nectar Bar in November 2008 after being abusive to the manager. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Kylie Jane told the Geelong Magistrates' Court yesterday that Wilkie walked past the pub three times and yelled:

"Where is that f--king poofter".

"You, you poofter, I'm going to get you, you will be taken care of.

"You poofter, I'm going to take care of you."

Sen-Constable Jane said there were many people walking past the hotel and the manager felt threatened by Wilkie's language.

Defence lawyer Gerard Healy said Wilkie's words could be heard at any Collingwood match 10 years ago at Victoria Park.

"This is not the most serious matter you will deal with today," Mr Healy said.

Magistrate Ron Saines said he did not regard the crime as a minor matter and took offence at using Collingwood supporters as an excuse.

"I don't agree with the submission of what might have occurred at Victoria park 10 years ago and I'm not making jokes either," Mr Saines said.

"It's not relevant to what occurred in Ocean Grove on Easter Sunday at lunchtime."

Wilkie pleaded guilty to behaving in an offensive manner.

Mr Saines told the defendant he would be jailed should he come before the court again.

Wilkie was convicted and fined $700 and ordered to pay $42.10 in costs.

You think there was a problem 10 years ago? Just wait for the ferals to return in full song next year.
