Sturt might be a chance as they did in 2002 or will it be Centrals yet again ???
Is Centrals supporter base the largest in SANFL with all those recent flags.
Ceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeentrals, Ceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeentrals.
Go you dogs.
I can just imagine their chants.

How many straight GF for the Gowan twins ?
Is that 14 straight Grand Finals ??
Local Geelong league, St Kilda, Werribee and Centrals.
They are freaks as are centrals.
Talk about a dynasty.

The only time I have watched Central Districts play was an ardath cup game against Dandenong in 1978 at the old lakeside Oval and they got flogged by 10 goals.
Might have also seen them play another time if they did play at VFL park as I attended all the night matches there on Tuesday nights.
I do remember watching West torrens beating Footscray as well as Claremont knocking off Hawthorn. You did see quite a few of the SA and WA teams knock of the vfl teams. On the other hand the VFA sides did beat some of the SA and WA teams in the Ardath and Escort Cip matches.
Funny how that happened.

I do remember watching on tv in 1976 Norwood give Carlton a terrible hiding at Norwood Oval booting 22.14.146 to 5.10.40. A bloke called Jim Michaelanny kicked 10 goals.

Hi all!

Sorry folks, I don't post much but read plenty on here so go easy on me :D

Robbo, vfa, well done for the posts.

This Grand Final promises to be really tight. If it's any indication, the sum of winning margins in the five minor finals this year has been just 34 points, ie, average just under seven points per game! Reckon the crowd will push 35,000 again this Sunday.
Is Centrals supporter base the largest in SANFL with all those recent flags.
Not the largest (3rd or 4th in line in the SANFL) but pound for pound the most passionate and colourful over here, including the two AFL sides.

I was fortunate to be being part of the race banner contingent in front of about 35,000 that turned up for the 2000 Grand Final. Up went the banner, up went the chant - particularly from the northern end of Footy Park. Very English soccer style, it echoed against the stand and around the stadium, totally spine chilling. Sure, been part of plenty of larger crowds but nothing beats that moment for this 'Doggies fan. No question that it motivates the players.

Yeah, Centrals are heading into their 12th Grand Final in 15 years. The Twins and one of our co-Captains Matthew Slade are the only three to have played in all seven Premierships to date, all three fit to have another crack at a tough Sturt outfit this weekend.

Those Gowans boys an amazing run of Grand Finals. Going from an article in a recent finals edition of match day program the "South Australian Football Budget" , I reckon this is would be Chris and James's 16th in a row (happy to be corrected):-

Strathmore - Essendon District Football League (1 Grand Final)
Anglesea - Bellarine Football League (3 GFs)
Werribee - VFL (1)
St Kilda - AFL Reserves in its final year 1999 (1)
Central District - SANFL (9 in a row as at last year)

Collected a few Jack Oatey Medals (Grand Final B.O.G.) between them in their time here to boot.

I'm certain that Centrals never played at Waverley, certainly not shown in a list of games in the "CDFC 40 Year Almanac". However, it does show us only ever playing Dandenong once, and that was indeed at South Melbourne, but in 1977 (the last of our two Wooden Spoon years) and losing by 19 points. Just got the better of Preston at Elizabeth a couple of weeks earlier in a high scoring match.

Victorian state league footy fans, if you're in the CBD this Sunday arvo, do yourselves a favour and get into the Charles Dickens. Or get on a train, this Tavern is just five minutes walk from Flinders Street station. Have a drink, watch a great game of footy, have some dinner, head home - couldn't be simpler! Plenty of time to get home to see the young'ns into the cot ready for first day back at school.

Robbo, good on you for getting over here. I hope you and all that make the trip have a great time!

Thanks folks,
SD.

PS - GO YOU DOGS!

Good summary stray dog.
Sturt were a super power winning flags from the mid 60s.
Port Adealide were also a champion side winning six straight flags from thr late 50s.
If the dogs have another win this weekend will this be classed as one of the greatest eras ?
How many players have won eight flags as a player ?
Huge effort if they get over the line as the Gowans twins will bring up flag number eight for centrals.
Eight premierships in 10 years what an achievement.

SANFL THEME SONGS

CENTRAL DISTRICTS

MIGHTY FIGHTING BULLDOGS (tune of Yankee Doodle Dandy/Hawthorn Song)

We're a winning team at Centrals
We're the mighty fighting 'dogs
We love our Club and we play to win
Riding the bumps with a grin at Centrals

Come what may you'll find us striving
Teamwork is the thing that talks
One for all and all for one
Is the way we play at Centrals
We are the mighty fighting 'Dogs.

STURT

GRAND OLD FLAG (Melbourne Song)

Its a Grand old flag, Its a high-flying flag
Its the emblem for me and for you
Its the emblem of the team we love
The team of the old Double Blues
Every heart beats true for the old Double Blues
As we sing this song to you..........what do we sing?
Should old acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the old Double Blues

The Footscray Bulldogs donated a set of jumpers to Centrals in the early 60's i believe as the Centrals were a new club and not as financial as some of the powerhouses, seemed the good deed payed off for Centrals, if only Footscray could have enjoyed 1/8th that success in the last decade...
