Roughouse team

Roughouse team

B- Lyle Henrickson, Alf Beus, Alan Harper
HB- Trevor Price, Jeff Sarau, Ray Brain
C- David Thorpe
HF- John Sharp, John Bourke, George Allen
F- Andy Goodwin, Sam Kekovich, Mark Cross
FOLL- Harold Martin, Buster Harland
ROV- Brian Jones
INT- Charlie Daniels, Adrian Zappa, Wes Hillard, Robert Mace
COACH- Take your pick ??
Plenty of firebrand coaches to pick from.
Talk about lunatics check the interchange bench !!!!

How would any of today's team feel like when they line up against this team ?
A thug on every line. No player would be safe, not even on the bench !!!

Can others pick a team of thugs ??
Blackrocker, JB, Cgull, Zebraman, Billy The Kid, Mustiang etc
Pick a team of thugs. Interesting to see everyones thought of their team of thugs.
There would be plenty that I have overlooked or forgotten about as there have been many colourful and tough charachters over the years.

That's a fantastic effort, vfa.

Just imagine sitting down to watch 3 hours of entertainment on Channel 0 about 30 or so years ago and seeing that team rum onto the ground!

Sweet VFA indeed!

whilst not wanting to question your qualifications for picking such a side; Brian Jones as a thug doesn't quite work for me - or have I got the wrong Brian Jones?

you've covered some good ground there...

Brian Jones??...the pint size rover from Frankston??

Naaah....he wasn't a thug or a roughouse by any means

Glad you included Lyle Henricksen....for me, one of the toughest players ever

I can add a few more names...as to what position they play....

Mick Thompson -Port Melbourne...saw him interchanged at Frankston one day and he belted Brian Jones at the interchange area

Kevin Goss...Port...what can I say

Bruce Gonsalves...Preston...

Jim McNamara - Dandenong...belted Sandy rover Bryan Williams from pillar to post one day at Shepley Oval...Hooker Harrison came off the bench and sorted him out quick smart

I must go back through my old records to drag out some more names

Sandy. The most successful club in the past 30 years

Alan Morrow when coaching Dandy in a Semi final at Richmond knocked out Sandy rover Peter Hogan after he had kicked a couple of goals. That ended that Zebras day.
Morrow was tough and would have been a good coach for this VFA/VFL tough team.

I probably included him (Brian Jones)as one game he played he was more than pysichal. Also remember a few of us giving hip a bit of lip and he grabbed a fistful full of mud and hurled it over the fence. Very funny. There are probably more psycho rovers than Jones. I will have to have a good think.
Others to throw in are Anthony Dorgan Sunshine (Mustang would agree there), Ricky McLean Sunshine yet again, Rags Radziminski a real firebrand, Barry 'Gabby' Nolan was very tough but not in the mould of the team above. He was very fair but boy was he a tough player.
Micky Thompson from Port and Oakleigh would be a contender of course.
CGull you can add a few to this list no problems.

Yes, vfa, Sunshine certainly had some wild players under Ron Brown in the mid 1980s.

I remember Anthony Dorgan absolutely smashing Wally Withers in a semi-final, Wally was certainly no shrinking violet either but didn't see that one coming. Other Crows that had short fuses included Danny Mitrovski, Pepi Protetto and Butch Litchfield who could really play but didn't mind handing them out either.

In the 1986 GF 6 Sunshine players were reported on 13 charges. With most sent off for 15 minutes and Box Hill only winning by 18 points, it probably cost them the Premiership. Box Hill didn't have one player reported. I think Peter Nicholson set a record with 4 different players reported for striking him!

From a few years earlier, Ricky McLean was certainly one big, scary guy. At least he was to me - I was a kid at the time!
