CRACKING THE CODE ... AFL with Karmichael Hunt
THE biggest question mark coming to the AFL was always on what position I would play.
After trying the mid-field, up front and since starting a few games down back, I agree with coach Guy McKenna that playing in the defensive line is where I will be most suited.
To be given the blessing by the coach and know that when we return for our pre-season that I can prepare in a set position has put my mind at ease.
I'm starting to build on each week and I feel more comfortable at the back.
Having that reassurance has me eager to finish the last two games strongly.
While rugby league and the AFL differ greatly, there were plenty of similarities in defence to that of playing fullback in rugby league.
Hopefully some of these can aid in the transition.
I think my role as a rugby league fullback, in terms of seeing the play come down and having that vision to defensively affect the contest, bears a striking similarity to some of the situations you face in AFL. That responsibility as a defender definitely has transferred through for me and I'm looking to build on it.
We're lucky to have wonderful coaching staff around us and I've been working closely with Shaun Hart, who is in control of the defensive work.
With two games left, hopefully I can continue to translate some of that work with Shaun and Bluey into my performances.
But another driving factor will be ending our year on home soil strongly against the Werribee Tigers at Southport's Fankhauser Reserve tomorrow. Being our last home game, our fans will not have a chance to watch us again until we step into the big league next year.
Our loyal supporters have shown us some fantastic support.
I know from the games I've played a lot of people are coming down to watch us and the boys have really taken to the occasion.
That's why this weekend, while we want a good performance first and foremost for the team, a big effort would also serve as a thank you to everyone for the support our fans have shown.
