MEDIA RELEASE
From the Minister for Sport & Recreation

A major redevelopment of Frankston Oval received a significant boost today, with the Brumby Labor Government committing $1.5 million to the community project.

Sports Minister James Merlino joined Member for Frankston Alistair Harkness today to announce the funding, which will benefit the Frankston Dolphins and wider community.

"Victorians love their sport, that's why we continue to improve and upgrade our sporting clubs so that even more people can get involved in sport and their community," Mr. Merlino said.

"Back in 2008, the Frankston Dolphins lost their grandstand to fire."

“This major redevelopment project will complement the new grandstand and create even more quality space for both players and fans to play and watch the game”. Mr Merlino said it wasn’t just the Dolphins and VFL fans that would benefit, local clubs and community groups would also have access to the new facilities for meetings and get-togethers.

“Greater use by the Frankston Community will encourage people of all ages and abilities to get involved in sport and active lifestyles,” Mr Merlino said.

“By investing in developments like these we’re not only helping to make the VFL the premier State level football competition in Australia, but injecting new life into local clubs and sport.”

The $1.5 million funding for the project builds on the Victorian Government's $10 million Improving Community Access to VFL Grounds initiative which over the last three years has helped improve community access to, and use of, VFL grounds.

Other VFL grounds to have benefited by the funding package include Casey Fields, Preston City Oval, Port Melbourne Cricket Ground, Sandringham's Trevor Barker Oval, Werribee's Chirnside Park, Williamstown Cricket Ground and a new VFL ground at the Highgate Recreation Reserve in Craigieburn.

Member for Frankston Alistair Harkness said the redevelopment was a great result for the Frankston Community. “Working together we can ensure VFL teams and their grounds can continue to be a focal point not just for the development of elite sports people but also for grassroots football and opportunities for the whole community.”

"Hopefully when the new facility is complete we'll see even more locals join in the fun and get behind the next generation of VFL football heroes here at the Frankston Oval."
