Because the coverage of VFL football in the Herald Sun & The Melbourne Age is fairly marginal & often refers to VFL teams by their AFL affiliate title e.g. “St Kilda affiliate Sandringhamâ€, the local newspapers become an extremely important media opportunity for local clubs. However, the problem is that Sunday games lack coverage because they’re outside publication deadlines.
Can anyone advise whether local newspapers would be happy to get articles/copy directly from the VFL clubs or do they restrict themselves to the local reporters? With respect to the Bayside Leader, Paul Amy does terrific articles from Sandringham but only where the match is played on a Saturday.
I’d be interested in how other VFL clubs are trying to exploit local media opportunities (other than online avenues) to overcome this.
