Seagulls ready for Foxtel Cup Finale

Christian Howard, Peter German and Brett Johnson with the inaugural Foxtel Cup trophy.

Williamstown is all set for the Grand Final of the Foxtel Cup with both coach Peter German and Captain Brett Johnson both stating today the Seagulls are ready for the challenge. At a joint media conference today both coach and captain explained how beneficial the competition had been this year in allowing younger players the opportunity to make their mark on the national scene.

This year has seen Williamstown players Nick Walters, Sam Caruso, Michael Fogarty and Stephen McCallum all make their debut in Williamstown colours throughout the first few rounds of the Foxtel Cup. Williamstown Coach Peter German said the Foxtel Cup had the double benefit of being able to rest seniors players, whilst giving younger players a chance to perform.

Attentions now turn to Claremont for the Seagulls with both Johnson and German returning to the state where they both have spent time previously. Johnson was born and bred in Perth playing for Swan Districts before being drafted to Hawthorn. German spent time in Perth as an assistant coach at both Fremantle and West Coast, whilst also coaching Subiaco to WAFL Premierships in 2004 and 2006. When quizzed today about the level of intelligence Williamstown would undertake in tracking Claremont, German said he’d be using his strong connections in the West to research the powerful home side.

Both sides have performed impressively in the first three rounds of the competition with Williamstown defeating Swan Districts, West Adelaide and East Perth en route to the decided, while Claremont have taken the competition by storm beating Clarence, Northern Bullants and Port Adelaide Magpies to earn their spot in the final.

Williamstown will travel to Perth on Friday in preparation for the game, with a light training run schedule for late Friday afternoon.

The match can be seen live on Fox Sports 1 from 4:30PM – Australian Eastern Standard Time.
Full video coverage of today’s press conference will be available on SeagullsTV tomorrow.
