Welcome aboard Eastern Footy. Who do you follow in the local EFL ?

Great work Eastern Footy. I remember when Klsyth was a VFA club between 1982/4. I went to the Kilsyth Rec Reserve twice in 1983/4 for the clash against my old VFA team Northcote.

I follow Kilsyth as I grew up there. My brother played with them in the mid 80s to around 2000 and also coached them for a year or 2

My big boss at work was the Kilsyth President for quite a few years. I think he finished up last season. His son was a former player who played for quite a few seasons. I got hold of an old tape featuring a Kilsyth v Oakleigh from 1984 played at Kilsyth Rec Reserve. Rare VFA footage of Kilsyth. One player that I remembered in the footage was number 16 ruckman Stuart Gibb. They played it tough most games. This game was no exception even though they were flogged by 200 points. In their 3 seasons Kilsyth were near the bottom but never came last. They had some big scalps inlcuding Caulfield and my team Northcote in their few wins. Russell Hodges ex South Melbourne, Fitzroy and Sandringham was Kilsyth's inagural coach.

I remember Russell Hodges playing at Sandy 1979/81 34games and a terrific halfbackman also gave his best all the time.
AS Sandy never played in Div. 2 we never saw Kilsyth so what were their colours?

Red with a black sash. Reverse to Essendon. They were called the Cougars.

Was a huge mistake leaving the EFL to go play in the VFA in my opinion....Coming back to the EFL in 1985 and being wooden spooners that same year wasn't great but the club did win the division 4 flag in 1990 against a red hot Heathmont, who beat Kilsyth 3 times that yer lol..... Oh the memories. Then to win the division 3 1995 flag from 4th spot was a great effort too but since then its just be very ordinary!!!

Not sure about a big mistake joining the VFA. In the late 70s the VFA pursued a number of clubs like East Ringwood, Vermont, Greensborough and Springvale a few years before they joined. The VFA almost had 3 Divisons. If that happened, who knows what format there would be today. Maybe there could have been 4 or 5 Divisions ? It would have been much harder to get rid of clubs when there a more member clubs and the following of the competition would have been huge. There would have been quite a few country clubs involved. We can only speculate. Kilsyth joining was a complete surprise to many. They did have a few upset wins.

Kilsyth scores in the VFA for the ingaural season in 1982 are as follows :

R1 Kilsyth 16.10.106 Northcote 21.25.151
R2 Mordialloc 22.8.140 Kilsyth 19.12.126
R3 Caulfuield 16.20.116 Kilsyth 9.24.78
R4 Kilsyth 11.17.83 Yarraville 12.7.79
R5 Springvale 23.22.160 Kilsyth 11.16.82
R6 Kilsyth 20.12.132 Brunswick 16.12.108
R7 Box Hill 18.22.130 Kilsyth 17.13.115
R8 Kilsyth 24.17.161 Sunshine 13.8.86
R9 Oakleigh 26.18.174 Kilsyth 12.15.87
R10 Northcote 20.19.139 Kilsyth 16.8.104
R11 Kilsyth 13.8.86 Mordialloc 16.11.107
R12 Kilsyth 12.14.86 lost to Caulfield
R13 Yarraville 21.19.45 defeated Kilsyth
R14 Kilsyth 11.13.79 Springvale 13.11.89
R15 Brunswick 27.32.194 Kilsyth 15.14.104
R16 Kilsyth 13.15.93 Box Hill 18.17.125
R17 Sunshine 10.12.72 Kilsyth 19.17.131
R18 Kilsyth 12.15.87 Oakleigh 30.17.197

Best win for the year would no doubt be the 4 goal win against Brunswick in Round 6.

VFA, I will back up Easternfooty on this. It was a huge mistake. What remains of the old club has never been the same.
They have only just paid off the debts from those three years and started to find their feet again.
As someone who still lives in Kilsyth i see very little of the old people of Kilsyth who i grew up knowing. Many great local people lost their footy club.
It is good to see the Eastern Ranges now make use of the old ground, Kilsyth rec reserve.

I don't know the ins and outs. You would be better to comment regarding Kilsyth. All I know it was a surprise that they joined the VFA in 1982.
