I don't know the ins and outs. You would be better to comment regarding Kilsyth. All I know it was a surprise that they joined the VFA in 1982.
It still surprises me too VFA. At the 1981 AGM it was put to the members that the club had been invited to join the VFA.
It was discussed, and some reasons for and against were raised along with peoples questions. It was put that instead of dropping to 3rd division of the Eastern league we should aim to play at the highest level. All very well, but through asking questions it had already been established that there was no sponsors or funding in place.
The vote, (the first one) was pretty much a confused non vote, and that is where things should have stayed.
It was a very long night of fairly calm talks before the second vote came and went with less than half support vissible through a show of hands. On it went until the goal of the few was reached in a third show of hands. seems incredible now that a common sense private ballot was not conducted. Anyhow, that is the night KFC as it was evaperated for ever. After Vermont Ringwood and Croydon flatly rejected invitations to join the VFA, little Kilsyth said yes. After the three years of the VFA, Kilsyth were back in 3rd division eastern flat broke after everyone had since moved on. To field a team they took blokes off Croydon station (not joking) to survive.

Can't argue with that Whitehorse Road. It is very surprising to say the least. I must say there are lot of shockers that have hung around Croydon Station over the years. I have seen all sorts of losers in my time that hang sround there.
Not sure why the Ringwood and Vermont's of the world refused to go to the VFA. Money maybe ?
Springvale which was courted in the late 70s finally joined the VFA in 1982, the same year Kilsyth joined. They won the 2nd Division flag in 1983 and Division one 4 years later. Wonder how Vermont would have gone. I reckon if they were financially secure they could have excelled in the VFA and to this day could be one of the elite clubs.
Still I would like Kilsyth to improve their fortunes in the EFL and climb through the divisons. How are they for juniors coming through the ranks. You will find the likes of Norwood, Knox and Blackburn with strong juior base, the higher the grade the more likely the juniors stay with the club.
Good luck to Kilsyth for 2012 and hope to see them go deep into the finals. At least the club still excists unlike Sunshine, my old team Northcote, Dandenong, Oakleigh, Brunswick, etc.

Would you happen to know how many games they won-lost in the other years they were in the VFA?

I'll post the full list of scores tomorrow here. I know they beat my team Northcote at Colchester Road in 1983. Northcote were trailing by 9 goals at 3/4 tim but slashed the marging to just under 5 goals.

Dazza

Interesting to see that from all those 3 years of results, only 2 teams remain in the VFL, Box Hill & Springvale. And they are really Hawthorn & Melbourne reserves.
Still drive by the old Waverley ground sometimes. Always thought they and Oakleigh had good grounds and would have survived. As a long time Box Hill supporter (yes even the middle to late 70's) just not the same anymore where players played for their club and not in the hope to get to the "seniors - afl". Haven't been to a game since they were taken over by Hawthorn.

The old 2nd Division days are missed (including the Lightening Premierships)
