The Bendigo Bombers will split from Essendon at the end of the 2012 VFL season.
The club made the announcement at its grand final eve business luncheon this afternoon at the All Seasons Quality Resort

While Essendon will have to apply for a licence, Bendigo will be allowed to go stand-alone in 2013 because it has a licence to play in the VFL for the next three years.

To be known as the Bendigo Football Club, the team will wear navy blue and gold uniforms in line with traditional Bendigo colours.

The team's nickname is still to be decided.

Fantastic News!! Welcome the 3rd standalone VFL side into the comp. Hope it all goes well in Bendigo.

Good luck to the Diggers. Hope they forge a good bond with the Bendigo Pioneers. Great footy area and they are far better off without Essendon. Just hope they have the funds and make a good go of it.

Carn the Diggers! Hope they win more games than Essendon.

I might even buy a 'Diggers' membership just a little way to help them in their first stand alone year.

Great news

Used them up enough have you Essendon or will you field a team to beat the burra :)

Exciting news for the Bendigo region and I can't wait to get involved once we are a standalone Bendigo club. Great to hear that we are only wearing the Essendon jumper 3 times next year and will wear the new jumper all the other times.

I wonder what name they will go with.

Bendigo will never ever be a CLUB without a reserves team.

We might be from the bush. but we ain't green

It is a shame that you have so much negativity. Here we are having a go at being standalone which doesn't start until 2013 and you are already getting stuck in.

How about we see how Bendigo andf the VFL shape up and congratulate them on being a Bendigo team that will represent bendigo and not be an AFL reserves team.

GO BENDIGO!!!!!!!!!!

Caveman,
You have it all wrong my friend. There is no one who wants Bendigo to thrive & be successful more than me.
It is vital for this competition to have competitive regional teams as well as metro teams to make the comp truly state wide & I wish a few more would regions would take up the challenge.
My comments on the reserves is based on experience, as I have had a fair bit to do with the introduction of the North Ballarat Roosters into the VFL since 1996.
As you would know the football leagues around Bendigo are totally opposed to the VFL & are too blind to see what the long term benefits can be.
All the better district players & graduating Pioneers must be coached & developed through the VFL coaches system & not by a dozen district coaches.
Good luck & I for one hope that it all works out BUT...
If the CLUB doesn't have a reserves team in which to develop their players....THEY WONT SURVIVE.
And that would be a terrible shame.

Fair enough Digs! I totally understand and agree but lets give them time to set up as standalone and hopefully a reserves side is on the agenda.

I would love nothing more than to get to the QEO and watch the reserves followed by the seniors. I really hope they use the Diggers name again!
