THE first cracks may be beginning to show at Port Melbourne after it dropped its second game of the season last week.

The Borough, one of only two stand-alone VFL clubs, has been defeated by two stand-alone AFL clubs, Collingwood and Geelong, in the past month.

After riding a 28-game winning streak, coach Gary Ayres admits the gap between it and the rest of the competition has closed, particularly among the top five teams.

Second-placed Casey is equal with Geelong on eight wins, ahead of Sandringham and Werribee, two new challengers who do battle tomorrow.

Ayres said he had to try to change the mindset of his players for today's clash against Coburg, another team renowned for taking big scalps.
