Where did this news come from Robbo? Nothing on either club's websites, nothing in the online versions of the dailies & a google search found nothing.

Good news for the 'Burgers I would have thought, gives them an extra 12 months to gear up for life as a standalone or to seek an another alliance or maybe revert to the Coburg-Fitzroy Lions, which I thought was going along rather nicely at the time.

Yeah I always wondered why the Fitzroy tie up didnt keep going.

BTW it was after seeing Coburg Lions in a VFA final in the 1960s that the Fitzroy decided to change their nickname from the Gorillas to the Lions and ofcourse later they dropped the original Maroon and Blue colours for the brighter red and Blue and Gold.

The brighter red was for the advent of colour TV in 1975 billy, same as Melbourne went to a lighter blue.

And Dandenong went with the horrible red shorts and Sandy the blue shorts.

Where will Coburg be at in 2014 ?
Either with the dogs, stand alone or forge another link with the Roys ?

Any thoughts ?

At least 12 months gives the burgers more time to get ready with life after Richmond who will be stand alone in 2014.

As per Robbo's breaking news and raised on ABC TV today, Coburg and Richmond will split at the conclusion of the 2013 VFL season.

A big task to rebuild the club ahead of the Coburg Lions!

Coburg needs to form strong alliances with Calder Cannons & other northern suburban leagues & offer kids a clear pathway. They also need to have some solid sponsorship in place. They need to lure some of their lost supporters back, if that's possible. It'll be tough without another revenue stream (ie pokies) but it's to be hoped they can survive & thrive.

The AFL clubs after using the VFA clubs because they didnt have the money to have their own reserve teams are now ditching them at a rapid rate

By 2014 there will be at least 6 maybe 7 if you include Footscray AFL seconds clubs playing the VFL? (sic)

That only leaves North,St Kilda and Melbourne and what do they all have in common? Broke and going nowhere but as you can see the moment they are financial enough or the AFL pumps more money into them they also will ditch the alingements.

You lay down with dirty dogs and you get fleas!

I followed football for over 60 years and the VFL/AFL have always put their club interests before their interests before the interests of OUR game in general.

It will always be like this so If any stupid VFA people out their think getting into bed with the AFL was going to be great then they are more stupid than I thought they were!

From what I understand (and I didnt hear this first hand) the Coburg-Fitzroy partnership ended because the new board found a sizeable old tax bill that had been buried. They offered the ATO, who until the club raised it had no idea the debt existed, to pay it back in increments.

But the ATO demanded immediate payment which the club couldnt possibly meet, forcing it to enter into an alignment or go bankrupt.

It would be great to see the Coburg-Fitzroy Lions return, but I cant help think the AFL will pressure Williamstown into staying with the Bulldogs for another year and then hitch the Bullies up with Coburg. Just a gut feel, could be way off the mark.

Hopefully the AFL Clubs can go back to the Reserve Comp and Leave the VFL
