Being a standalone AFL club in the vfl will not automatically get you success in the vfl. Collingwood were disgraceful on Saturday in the VFL. The VFL standalone teams want to WIN at all COSTS. The AFL standalone teams want to run their clubs and play their players where they want. The bottom scale of a standalone AFL team lists in the VFL will be shallow and mainly top ups.
Geelong on the otherhand has unearthed some good kids. Bit of a mixed bag with the AFL standalone teams.
This comp is basically all over the shop with stand alone afl, standalone vfl, part aligned, fully aligned as well as Carlton (formerly Preston) seconds saving a buck. Could have as many as 16 teams in 2014.
Geelong's decision to spend money on a playing assistant (Troy Selwood) was a good use of resources. It reminds me of the role Damien Peverill played for Collingwood in 2009.
Having those on-field leaders give advice and support to developing footballers is the best thing an AFL stand-alone side can do.
agree minka. geelong have been at the forefront in this area. podsiadly and gleeson two other examples.
Footy is the winner
