I think the official figure for attendance at 2000 GF was about 7000. Mrs Cobrascorer and I grabbed a seat in what we thought was a good possie, but then the rain came and we moved back under some cover, only to be swamped by most of the enormous crowd!
Dreadful match result that day.
My recolection is that the crowd was about the 8000 mark which of course looked terrible at Waverley a bit like the RL games at ANZ stadium in Sydney and the Sandy v Frankston 1997 game at Port had 10,000 - 11,000.
I still reckon the Junction Oval would be the best fit for the VFL finals.
I can confirm that the ABC's 'Coodabeens' will be at North Port Oval on Saturday morning, doing an outside broadcast from 10am :)
2003 prelim at Port was 7000 according to official records. I do recall beer running out early in the 3rd term.
Was that the year Aaron Davey played for Port? If so I also recall that the weather wasn't so flash (no pun intended!), but it was a good close game even well into the last quarter.
Coodabeens at a VFL venue??? Our ABC Radio has a policy to not mention the VFL. I would expect that it will deal as usual with solely AFL matters. I gave up on this mob years ago due to its refusal to mention any football other than AFL.
I suppose they'll talk to Mr Keenan, after instructing him to not mention the ABC banned VFL.
Yes Davey played and Shannon Motlop kicked a couple of monster goals late in the game from well inside the centre square. It was a strange day weather wise. In the early 20s and strong breeze to the Willy road end as usually happens in september. The rain came in the second half.
Lets not forget that gate attendances count every person who walks through the gate over the course of the whole day. So naturally the crowd for a reserves game is counted but will most likely leave the venue when the seniors start. But some stay as well obviously.
If the VFL want to get decent crowds to North Port this weekend they need to start PROMOTING the games but I think that is something they seem to know nothing about.
Maybe their wages should be linked to the success of the finals and then you might see them get off their collective arses!
That's a relief Burra, I always thought that they counted the heads.
We might be from the bush. but we ain't green
Not sure what they count in Ballarat Digs but yes we count human beings at Port! How do you think Port will go this week anyway?
Still flag favourites for mine Burra. I think it will depend on how many of the aligned teams AFL players are available & interested & qualified.
