Footscray to standalone from 2014.

... It came as the Bulldogs revealed they would be fielding their own stand-alone VFL side in 2014.

"The establishment of a stand-alone VFL side has been a clear strategic objective for the club and it is very pleasing this will become a reality," chief executive Simon Garlick said.

The VFL side will play matches at the club's Whitten Oval headquarters.

The Dogs' VFL affiliate, Williamstown, will also revert to stand-alone status.

The Whitten Oval will need a lot of money spent on it to come up to VFL standard.
The way the WB are travelling they will be a pretty poor standalone VFL team it also begs the question of how many AFL teams field their seconds before they change the name to the AFL reserves comp?

Footscray as a standalone team in 2014 will be about as competitive as Yarraville eagles were in 1983 their last season in VFA.

Probably a good thing for Williamstown to have another 12 months to prepare as a standalone team. They already have some good VFL players on their list. Would be great to see all four standalone VFL teams in 2014 do well.

Willy will go okay as a stand alone club.

I heard there is a lot of politics at the bulldogs regarding bringing back the footscray name.

I hope the VFL team gets creative and operates independantly from the AFL and provides a pathway for players in the area. A joint venture with yarraville-seddon eagles would also be great to establishing a community base

West Torrens formed 1895 (merged woodville 1991)
Port Melbourne formed 1874

Willy better work hard to win a premiership next year as it will be their last chance, because as the Williamstown "great" Saade Ghazi said, a stand alone VFL side cannot win the premiership.

Would have to be the most ridiculous comment that has ever been posted. Yarraville Seddon Eagles will struggle to win a game in first division WRFL in 2013. What would a joint venture achieve with the Bulldogs ?

Williamstown need to form a strong relationship with the WRFL as it will need to draw on a lot of top up players during the season. Footscray should sign up VFL players and try and tie them to WRFL clubs to lift the standard of the comp.
