Fred Cook

Just came back from my local supermarket where I ran into none other than Fred Cook...turns out he lives maybe 2ks away from where I live...told him I was a Sandy supporter...to which he replied...Well you can go and get F....d!!!!...we then had a good 10 minute chat in the carpark about the old VFA days...mentioned he was a good mate of Terry Wilkins...also still holds a pretty mean grudge against Allan Harper...he also told me that a young player down this way was in a bike/car accident and had to have both legs amputated...he'd been to see the player and found out that he was a mad Collingwood supporter and his favourite player was Dane Swan...Fred spoke to Billy Swan and has organised for Dane Swan to go and visit the young guy..a good news story from and old VFA legend

Great to hear fred is doing well. I do hope he comes back to port this year for a function or 2 or even just to watch the game. My family always spoke highly of him as a player & said he was a champion.

I do wish a medal or something was named in his honour (for example the new pavillion at port) one of the greats.

North Melbourne chased Freddie in 1977 but Footscray would not clear him or made it difficult. With the likes of Keith Greig, Wayne Schimmelbusch, Xavier Tanner, Barry Cable and co downfield Cook would have kicked plenty in vfl ranks no worries there. If Wade could top the ton in 1975 Freddie would have been a super star for the roos in 1977.
Cook was great to watch and could play at top level as he did play for Footscray then on to Yarraville winning a Liston. Crossed to Port after the eagles got relegated. He ended up finishing his VFA career at Moorabbin in 1985.

Sunday 5 May 1985, at Bentleigh, Moorabbin 20-16-136 v Sunshine 17-9-111.
Mostly sunny, warm, northerly breeze. Umpires Graeme Marcy and Ross Walker. Attendance about 2000. Dunno how many goals Fred Cook kicked.

When Moorabbin reformed they played at Bentleigh...Cnr Centre Rd and Jasper Rd I think..they finally got to unfurl their 1963 Premiership Flag after all those years

Sandy. The most successful club in the past 30 years

Moorabbin played at Moorabbin in 1983/84 then McKinnon in 1985 and finished up at Bentleigh in 1986/87. Not hundred percent on 1984 though.

Moorabbin played at Linton Street in 1983. Maurie Fields was president. (I attended Sunday 19 June. Moorabbin 30-28-208 v Yarraville 8-14-62. Umpires Budge and Casey. About 300 people there. Cold, cloudy, calm.) St Kilda charged $1000 a week for Moorabbin to have the privilege of playing on its home ground. This was unviable.

In 1984 Moorabbin played its first home games (Seconds and Firsts) at McKinnon, on Saturday 8 April. (Moorabbin 20-13-133 v Waverley 19-19-133. Umpires Barry Fitzpatrick and Peter Marshall. Sunny, mild, very strong wind. Kangaroos Seconds won.)

I'm pretty sure the McKinnon ground was only used the once. Bentleigh was apparently not available that weekend. From then, home games were at Bentleigh (as in post No 6).

Just a question were the goals Fred kicked for Moorabbin counted in his overall VFA total?
