Footscray to play in vfl next year

The name "Footscray" more than likely will be back at vfl level with the western bulldogs running a poll of what the new team will be named.

I'm sure many on here will be happy to see the team roll out as Footscray

It will be good to see the scraggers name back.
Rumour has it that Round one next year will be Williamstown v Footscray.

Yep Footscray in the VFA was a powerhouse club winning 9 flags before entering the VFL in 1925 their last season in the VFA as Premiers of the VFA played Essendon VFL premiers at the MCG organised by Dame Nellie Melba to raise money for WW1 veterans.

Footscray won the "Champions of Victoria flag" which used hang at the back of the changing rooms.

"On the Saturday after the VFL Grand Final, Essendon (in its role as 1924 VFL Premiers) was challenged by 1924 VFA Premiers, Footscray, to a match in aid of Dame Nellie Melba's Disabled Soldiers' Fund, purportedly (but not officially) for the championship of Victoria. Footscray unexpectedly thrashed Essendon 9.10 (64) to 4.12 (36). Again there were accusations of match fixing and bribery and fist-fights in the change-rooms, and the Essendon team almost did not take the field for the second half of the match. Champion centre half-back Tom Fitzmaurice was so disgusted with many of his team-mates having, in his view, deliberately lost the match, he never played again for Essendon; he went to Geelong the next year and played in his third consecutive premiership."

Will be Footscrays first season in VFA/VFL comp since 1924 which will make a return after 90 years !!
They will be playing quite a few games in Western Victoria.

Not sure but they are likely to play games at Western Oval with some games all over the place. Maybe Reid Oval Warrnambool, Colac or wherever they want to travel to.
Wouldn't be surprised if they had an other game at Keilor. Williamstown did play North Ballarat there a few years ago.
I don't think they will play all home games at Western oval. Doubt that will happen as with no fence they will not do that every home game. Better off spreading some games and promoting themselves as Footscray. Maybe a rivalry against Werribee, Geelong and Willamstown could be promoted in the country.

One can only hope that the name Footscray does go ahead in the VFL, and it gets so much support that that AFL team dumps the dumb, Americanised garbage "branding" of Western! As much as I don't like the idea of more AFL teams entering their reserves in the VFL, the Bulldogs are a different prospect than powerhouse clubs like Collingwood and Essendon, it could just be my perception, but I feel they might be better accepted, and Williamstown should stand alone too.

Go Borough!

having the Footscray Football Club active again will allow the AFL to move the Western Bulldogs to the Northern Territory and 're-brand' them the Northern Crocodiles or some such rubbish - with the money recieved for the move Footscray can go ahead in leaps and bounds.......well one can have dreams ;)

I reckon that's good news.
You never know the slimes might one day realise that it might be a good idea to call their club PRESTON.

We might be from the bush. but we ain't green

If the Facebook response is anything to go by, the Bulldogs supporters have overwhelmingly voted for the return of thr Footscray name in the VFA next season.
