Port Melbourne Football Club's existence is under Threat
The recently released Fishermans Bend Urban Renewal Area Draft Vision document (see attached link http://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/fishermans-bend.htm) has dire consequences for the Port Melbourne Football Club.

Amongst many proposals, this document implies that the perimeter wall around North Port Oval be dismantled and the area be converted into an open plan reserve.

If this proposal was to materialise it is likely to lead to end of the Port Melbourne Football Club. The club would lose $250,000 per year in gate takings and catering.

It would also call into question why PMFC, the AFL, AFL-Victoria and the State Government have invested $3,800,000 including $1,925,000 specifically from PMFC, in developing state league facilities at the reserve.

Whilst Port Melbourne Football Club supports many of the initiatives contained in this proposal and would embrace any opportunity to be an active community leader in this new precinct, the reality is we cannot perform this role if we do not have a club!

Port Melbourne Football Club President, Peter Bromley stated, "This is the biggest threat to the Port Melbourne Football Club in its 140 year existence. I strongly encourage all PMFC members, supporters and sponsors, in fact all football supporters to submit a response to the online survey located on the Places Victoria website stating your objection to the proposal of dismantling the perimeter wall around North Port Oval. If this proposal is successful the Port Melbourne Football Club will not survive."

How can you assist the PMFC:

State your opposition to this proposal via the online survey (see attached link http://www.places.vic.gov.au/cs/Satellite?c=VPage&cid=1316149683199&page...).
Voice your concerns with your local Member of Parliament or Local Councillor.
Spread the word that the PMFC’s future is under threat due to this proposal.
Make submissions to Places Victoria, 710 Collins Street, Docklands, VIC 3008.
Whilst Port Melbourne Football Club in conjunction with AFL-Victoria will be responding to the Fishermens Bend Urban Renewal Area Draft Vision document and stating our opposition to the proposed dismantling of the perimeter wall around North Port Oval, and warning of the dire consequences this action would have for our club, it is not enough. We need your active support.

The fence doesn't need to come down. It just needs more gates that are open on non-game days. Surely that's not too difficult!

I'm putting my response in now.

So far I have found:

The historic North Port Oval
will be a key open space in
Sandridge. A diverse range of
open spaces will complement
these playing fields, including
formal gardens, pocket parks
and intimate urban squares
which enhance liveability
in an intensive, vibrant
urban setting.
In the Fisherman Bend Urban Renewal Draft Vision document:

I am looking for more references.

I have completed both the parks.gov.au survey and the Port Phillip Council feedback. I'll call them in the morning.

Ive done the survey and commented on North Port Oval Ive said if anything the ground shoulb enhanced and also let open during non playing times for the public to use.

Unlike the ex AFL/VFL suburban grounds there is no AFL/VFL clubs playing there anymore so they dont need to be enclosed.

Port Melbournes ground is their home and playing space so the fence is vital.

As it is now you don;t exactly see other grounds in Port Melbourne being flooded with people trying to use them. You don;t often see a great number of people using Murphys reserve, Lagoon reserve from the general public therefor the area is coping ok with the publics needs. Theirs also other grounds which get little to no use. The two in mind I have are the ones in garden city, every time I walk through there - nobody is using them. Taking into consideration that parkland is plentifull then you wouldn't think that using Ports ground should even be discussed. Putting that aside though - if they feel that parkland is not enough then perhaps set a area aside in the area they are building to accomodate the new residents and not some 2 k's away.

Port Melbourne Football Club and Port Melbourne Soccer Clubs are semi profesional outfits which need their fencing and removing it to allow 1, 2 people a month to use the ground does not make any sence at all.

Have you made a contribution to the survey to preserve the BEST venue in the comp?

I think North Port is one of the best VFL/VFA venues but I would put Coburg,Sandy.Preston,Bendigo and Frankston not far behind.Of course Geelong and Carlton would be the best overall in the current VFL being AFL standard.
