Credit Union Cup 1995

Hi Guys
Found this game on an old vhs tape totally forgot about it.

What a great idea this was the VFA pre season compition and it made me think why couldn't something like this happen again ???

The Grand Final was played 1 week before the season started

Springvale v Box Hill played off in the Grand Final and it was played at Victoria Park Collingwood.

like we have practice matches but why not host a mini knock out compition ? insted of these junk practice matches ?

what do others think ???

I'm in favour of something like this. Was it a lightning comp with reduces game time or full games?

Perhaps play the foxtell cup pre season ? Alot of the time sides in the foxtell cup play make shift sides / experiment with players which would be no different what goes on during practice matches anyways.

17 PREMIERSHIPS, 33 x GRAND FINALISTS, 21 X Runners up

I like the idea and a knock out competition would work well now with 16 teams.I think any competitions pre-season gets more coverage if it is a competition no matter how seriously all the teams take it.

The difficulties I see would be:
Ground availability - not all teams would be able to host games due to cricket just as some grounds don't currently host practice matches. Grounds could be on standy to host games - Victoria Park, Princes Park, Whitten Oval even Highgate
Teams not wanting to participate (AFL reserves mainly I would think) as their pre-season practice matches wouldn't be set in stone, seemingly considered essential by AFL clubs.
Accommodating the Development League - I doubt VFL clubs would be very keen on their DL team playing against different opposition at different venues and days in practice matches as well as pre-season.

Of course these issues could be managed with some careful fixturing, having teams with DL sides play each other through the rounds and home games in the first round for teams that have grounds available.

Something like this
Franston play Coburg with the winner to play the winner of Sandringham v Port Melbourne

Frankston/Coburg v Sandringham/Port Melbourne

Casey/Williamstown v Werribee/Box Hill

North Ballarat/Bendigo v Footscray/Richmond

Collingwood/Geelong v Essendon/Northern Blues
