Just watched the AFL Sydney round 1 match between the Sydney Uni 'Students' and the North Shore 'Bombers' - I won't include a final score spoiler in case anyone wants to have a look at the game.

The Football:- The standard of play was quite good, I think the best way I can describe it would be 'Elite Local Footy' that at times would rival some VFL matches and certainly at least the equal of something like the NTFL summer competition. The actual match was a good, even contest - If you do watch it, look out for a cracker of an overhead mark in the third quarter.

The Coverage:- As is typical of a streaming event the main action was covered with a single camera, but also a 'locked' camera at the top of the grand stand for static wide shots of the entire ground. The comentary was provided by a single commentator and was quite acceptable.

The Verdict:- You could do a lot worse than watch this on a Sunday afternoon if there is no local footy to go to or decent AFL games on free-to-air tv.

On a side note, I personally found it ALL to easy to cheer for ANY team that is playing against the 'Bombers'...lol

AFL Sydney - Round 2 - Manly v Pennant Hills

***** SPOILER ALERT ******

This game was the Grand Final replay from last season. Now I'm no expert on AFL Sydney, but for a GF replay, this game was an absolute one sided affair. Manly (last season premiers) made Pennant Hills look like a third rate development team. I know one sided games can happen - but I wasn't expecting it in a GF replay......don't waste your time with this one..... on to the round 3 game next - Manly v NorthShore.

AFL Sydney - Round 3 - Manly v North Shore

This was, at times, a very scrappy affair played in difficult weather conditions - still a good contest between the two sides and worth a look if you feel the need to watch some extra footy. note:- due to technical difficulties, there is no audio for the first quarter of the match.

With no local footy over the Easter break, I decided to watch a couple of AFL Sydney games "From The Vault". Both games are from the 2013 season.

First up is the state representative game with the VAFA team taking on a team from AFL Sydney. Having never seen any VAFA football I really had no Idea what to expext.... The game turned out to be a very fast and free flowing game of football played by two side comprised of players who normally would be playing against each other rather than with each other. It was great to see the "Big V" in action and I can just picture Ted Whitten shouting, "You gotta stick it right up 'em". Interestingly, playing for the VAFA were the sons of both former Essendon player Simon Madden and former AFL Coach Rodney 'Rocket' Eade - if you have the means and the time I highly recommend watching this game. It is available here:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjQFSe52FuY

Second up is a game from the AFL Sydney Premier Division teams, The UTS Bats and The Universty of NSW / Eastern Suburbs. A very typical AFL Sydney game played on a suburban ground with a real 'Local Footy' feel that I just love. The game itself was nothing spectacular, but I quiet enjoyed watching it on Good Friday afternoon. Also the UTS Bats have what I think, is the coolest footy jumper that I have come across:-

I must say, I am fast becoming hooked on watching games from this league and look forward to the round 4 game on their youtube channel.

I would put the standard on average just below VFL level - but above what you would see at a local suburban match - also depending on which teams are playing. As for the crowds, difficult to say - then commentators don't mention numbers but as I stated in an earlier post, it's the 'local' feel that the games have that appeals to me.

AFL Sydney - Round 4 UNSW/ES vs St. George

Just a good, competitive game of footy (after all, that what you really want at the end of the day). Was good to see ex-Sydney Swans, Troy Luff and Joel Robbie running around and getting a kick.

Just watched the Suns (AwFuL Reserves) vs Lions (AwFuL Reserves) in round 1 of the NEAFL competition. while the standard of the footy was good, the game was played at metricon stadium which was basically empty - giving the game the feel of an AwFuL practice match. An AFL Sydney match at a suburban ground with a handfull of rowdy spectators has more atmosphere...lol

AFL Sydney - Round 5 - North Shore Bombers v Western Suburbs Magpies

From the AFL Sydney Website:-

......

At Gore Hill Oval, North Shore played host to Wests. The winner would find themselves in the top five. The Bombers went into the game with two wins, on the back of an impressive performance in their last season. The Magpies were a draw ahead of the Bombers on the ladder, but had tasted defeat for the first time last week. It was a game that promised plenty, and didn’t disappoint. It was a game that had everything – some great goals, strong marking, plenty of physical stuff and several lead changes in a game that would be in the balance until the end.......

.....

A good contest and a nice close game - It was nice to watch the Bombers v Pies without 100,000 ignorant morons yelling "BALL!" every time an opposing player gets within reach of the ball carrier....hahaha :D
