Port Melbourne 2014 side as good as 2011 side ?

Hi

On the tv coverage on the weekend Phill Cleary said something along the lines of "This Port Melbourne side on paper looks as good a side as the undefeated side of 2011". Although the team is 3 from 3 I was wondering what people thought of this comment.

Personally I think the side is a good side - and will be pretty competitive in season 2014 however I think it is premature to call the side equally as good as the last premiership side.

Your thoughts ?

I'd say no as Rose and Galea were very good forwards in 2011 and have a query on the strength of the forward line at the pointy end of the season.

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa Mega !!
On paper eh ......The only problem is that they don't bloody play on paper.
Nothing like a little self indulgence & getting ahead of oneself. For Port to be as good as 2011 side they have to win another 20 odd games & there would be 6 to 8 players that would not have got a look in in 2011.
Would not surprise me one bit to see you go over on the weekend !!

The side does look good, but I think Phil's comments on ABC were just for the build up on the TV coverage... I must say when Port are playing well, it is always good for the competition.

Digs yes I must agree with you for once :) A good side no doubt but to rate it to the level of 2011 is a MASSIVE call. I think I even saw somebody say a while ago that if we look back on the 2011 sides in 50 years that we will say it is one of the best of all time. To say this side is comparable to them is being very complementary however happy to be proved wrong. Time will tell. As per last post a good side a very good side bur perhaps comparing them to 2011 is too early a call to make. Having said that if Phil is right we may all be eating our words (or deleting our posts).

Too early to tell if the Port side is as good as 2011. Certainly all the other clubs have caught up, and possibly gone past Port.. Time will tell.

Port went into 2011 with two genuine rucks, which hasn't been the case in 2014.

Connors may end up playing a clever forward role, a little similar to Patty Rose that year.

A win against the Seagulls will do the confidence at Port no harm :)

Watching Cory McGrath being interviewed on TV today I thought to myself :-
Who is a better player in Port's current team than himself & Sam Dwyer ???
The answer................Nobody.
the same question could also be asked about Rose, Galea, McMahon,Batsanis, Skipper, Brewer, Dalton etc.
Time for the Port boys to move on, 2011 was then 2014 is now.

No team is as good as the 2011 Port Melbourne team until they go through a complete season undefeated.

As for this season's Port team, there are a lot of new players, where the 2011 version had a core that had played together for a number of years with a few handy recruits to fit in around them. On top of that it is questionable whether the talent level is quite as good this year.

Had a quick look at Port and Willy today and IMHO Port will take some beating

They were tough, fast with some excellent marking and hard at the ball in not the best of conditions with a strong breese blowing across Point Gellibrand that has been a graveyard to many a team in those conditions.

Phil probably meant this is Port's best side since 2011 which I would agree with. Many have said the 2011 is Port's best ever so lets not compare. A part from going undefeated that season we had players such as Bentick, Sinclair (now AFL), Bonaddio, Pitt, Langford etc that missed out.

Port have definately improved in areas that were deficiant in last season so I would expect them to return to top 4. Box Hill still the stand out for me.
