A History of VFA Finals added to hardballget.net

G'Day All A quick heads-up that the latest section of my site has launched:

A History of VFA Finals: https://www.hardballget.net/vfa-vfl-finals.html

It features...

EVERY VFA-VFL GRAND FINAL (1877-2013) - includes: dates, venues, quarter by quarter scores, crowds

2ND DIVISION GRAND FINALS (1961-1988) - the first such list online or in print

PREMIERSHIP CAPTAINS & COACHES - a complete list of all Captains and Coaches of VFA premiership teams

GRAND FINAL RECORDS - highest/lowest scores, most goals, biggest wins, etc

PREMIERSHIP TABLES - the number of titles won by each club, sorted by era

PREMIERSHIP TIMELINES - each club's Grand Final appearances listed chronologically

MINOR PREMIERS THAT MISSED OUT - first placed teams that missed the decider

CHALLENGE FINALS (1903-1932)

DRAWN, POSTPONED and ABANDONED FINALS

Plus much more. Also, for those who missed it, the first section of the site launched back in December and provides a detailed history of the VFA's role in representative/interstate football.

Plenty of VFA memories there so settle in and enjoy discovering it all.

Cheers, Easty

Fantastic work Easty.
Being a Northcote fan I was rapt with the 1982 flag.
They came fifth on several occasions and use to FLOG Box Hill for a long time. They had well over 20 consecutive wins from the early 70s to early 80s against the Mustangs.
In 1976 they were stiff not to beat the seagulls in the first semi final and I reckon their side was good enough to go all the way. I was confident that the seagulls would win the flag after beating my dragons in the first semi final.
Some interesting stats on crowd figures with many variations.
If we could turn back the clock and unearth missing footage from some of the VFA GFs would be gold.
From 1967 never seen anything (even on home footage) of the 68/69/70 1st Division Grand Finals. In second Division from 1967 the GFs that I have never seen any vision would be 1967/68/69/71/72/74/75/77/80.
I do remember replays of the 69/70 1st Div GF as well as the replays of 2nd Div GFs from 70/71/72/73.
Ch0 footage long gone unless an old canister is hidden in some one's garage gathering dust. Home footage could be lying around somewhere as well. 1980 Brunswick v Yarraville footage would have to be around somewhere.

Anyway keep up the superb work Easty and look forward to more data updated on the 'Hard Ball Get' Site.

That's a terrific site, Easty. I like the fact that everything is so exactly correct. Do you eventually plan on expanding the site to include home and away results?

The only (very minor) error that I found is that Caulfield's POS. in 1982 should read as '3' rather than '1'. The Oaks finished on top that season. vfa - as a Northcote supporter, you would remember the three wonderful games between Oakleigh and Northcote in '82. I was following Oakleigh at the time. Early in the season, we trailed by 51 points at Westgarth Street and came back to win by 23. In round 17, a Northcote player missed a shot after the siren (from memory) and Oakleigh won by 2 points. The second semi was the best of the lot. Oakleigh came back from, what, about ten goals down to hit the front before the Dragons steadied and went on to win, 25.20 to 23.9. A lot more exciting than today's low scoring borefests.

You are spot on Harps. Northcote and Oakleigh had some great tussles.
The Oaks were the top team and finished on top after the home and away. Northcote were superb in the second semi and were superb early. The Oaks came back firing and were just as impressive to briefly hit the front. Northcote responded to score in a very high scoring and classic VFA game.
You will probably remember the 1983 game at Westgarth Street where Buster Harland played for the dragons. Oakleigh won 16.7.103 to 12.20.92. Northcote probably should have won this game but as they say bad kicking is bad football.
In 1982 Round 2 at Northcote the dragons won 27.14.176 to Caulfield 11.16.82. In Round 11 at Caulfield the bears won 24.16.160 to Northcote 9.7.61. Amazing Northcote win at home by 16 goals yet lose at Caulfield by 99 points. The two met in the Grand where Northcote trailed at half time 2.9 to 7.9. By three quarter time the Dragons were in front by 2 points. They won a thriller by 5 points 12.15 to 11.16.
Some great memories Harps. Just a shame there was no promotion that year.
Kicking sideways and backwards does not do anything for the game of Australian Rules.

Sorry to Easty for hijacking his thread, but I'm sure he won't mind.

Yes, page 26 of The Age of 1/8/83(see link below)shows Buster listed in Northcote's best in the narrow loss to Oakleigh.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=MDQ-9Oe3GGUC&dat=19830801&printsec...

I reckon that was the only Northcote - Oakleigh game I missed between 81 and 87. The wins got bigger and bigger towards the end, until the 202 point result at Northcote in 1987 when Pretto kicked 15 (Oakleigh started copping those kind of defeats four years later). I remember that the Dragons had changed their jumper in '87 to a slightly darker green with two gold stripes down one side (similar design to Frankston). What was Northcote's jumper like before it was changed to the vertical stripes in the mid 70s? Was it dark green with a gold vee or a gold yoke?

Anyway, the '82 prelim was also an amazing game, as this time Oakleigh was a mile in front (8 goals, actually) and then folded like a pack of cards. I was too disheartened to go to the GF, but it must have been quite a match!

That +94/-99 stat is an interesting one. I wonder if there was ever a situation in the VFA where two clubs won by 100+ points against each other in a season.

Northcote was dark green with a gold V/yoke.
Northcote played Sunshine in the first ever VFA match telecast by ATV0 in colour in 1975.
This game would have to be hidden in the National Archives somewhere. Being the first in colour the film must be around.
Northcote's jumper in 1987 was changed. Not sure why. The dragons did have some well known names from the early 70s to the 80s. Peter McKenna, Rodney Hogg, Graeme Gellie, Brendan McArdle, Buster Harland, the Christou brothers and even Craig Huggins donned the Northcote jumper.
Oakleigh had terrific supporter base which probably started from the Bob Johnson days.
The chant of Ooooooooooooooooakleigh was legendary. The guy with the bugle Trevor I think his name was added to the crowd with the BUGLE.
The Oaks had many players that played several seasons together in Rino Pretto, Stephen Roach, Michael Roach, Wes Hilliard, Cunningham, Ian Todd and Mick Owen to name a few.
Oakleigh was a power in second division but missed out on a flag several times losing Grand Finals in 1979, 1984, 1985 and several Preliminary and First Semi Finals.
Win loss record from 1977 to 1988 would have been very good.
Port's best effort back in 1st Division from 1989 would be a TV game in 1990 where it beat Port at Port.

Not a final, but, can someone confirm the radio 3AK broadcast of Saturday, 16 June 1956?
Apparently The Age radio supplement (remember when radio programs were in newspapers?!) had Northcote v Camberwell. I attended that game, but have no record of taking my portable radio to the game. I reckon the broadcast match was Box Hill v Moorabbin.

Going through some old VFA score Northcote won 25 consecutive games against Box Hill from 1971 to 1983. I wonder if any other VFA club has had such a winning record against another team. Billy you might help us out here.

For the record here are Northcote's winning run against Box Hill.

1971 11 July Round 13 Northcote 20-06-126 d Box Hill 17-21-123

1981 19 July Round 15 Box Hill 21-11-137 lost to Northcote 28-15-183
1982 9 May Round 06 Northcote 21-19-145 d Box Hill 16-18-114
1982 25 July Round 15 Box Hill 15-19-109 lost to Northcote 21-18-144

I don't have Box Hill's exact score from Round 16 1973 but the mustangs kicked 10 goals.

A great site for VFA history fans like me

As I went to a number of VFA Rep games from the 1950s onwards its interesting to see how the memory is holding up.

Thanks, Digs (as well as VFA, Harps and Billy), your feedback is always appreciated. There's much more VFA History to come - final touches being added to the next section and, time permitting, it should be launched in the next few weeks. Stay tuned...
